What if you could find out whether you carried a gene for a life-threatening disease? Would you?

This book is a personal essay, filled with scientific and social policy information, about the author’s decision to be tested for a gene that would mean a disabled life and early death. In addition to her personal story, we learn how lawmakers in Washington respond to pleas from family members affected by the disease and how scientists are working to find a cure. I could not put it down.

A Compelling Story

Mona Gable brings to life -- like a fine investigative journalist -- how she solved a family mystery, scared the hell out of herself in the process, and sought to protect her kids by uncloaking the ravaging, relentless advance of an inherited disease that killed her brother. Detached at first as a way of protecting herself, Gable brings us increasingly into her own dawning awareness, horror and eventual acceptance. She doesn't hold back -- there are heroes and villains -- because that's how she rolls as a writer. She does all of us a favor by showing that courage sometimes comes merely from plowing ahead into the inevitable, come what may. A bravura, highly readable story that weighs in at about the length of a good novella.
