As the two pass through a region, he sizes up the local economy and recommends investment strategies. Often Rogers's tips seem on the mark, as in Eastern Europe and Asia. Yet for other places, Africa in particular, he appears uninformed. Predicting Zaire's imminent collapse, Rogers declares, "Zaire hasn't had its civil war yet," ignoring the Congo crisis of 1960-1965. Such inaccuracies mar what is otherwise an entertaining and unique world tour. Rogers, a notable Wall Street financier/investor who retired at age 38 after making a fortune, is a born risk-taker. In 1990 he took the biggest risk of his life by setting out on a BMW motorcylce to circumnavigate the globe, accompanied by his girlfriend. The journey lasted 20 months; the couple traveled more than 60,000 miles across 51 countries on six continents. Why did Rogers do it? Quite simply, to see the world. He offers insightful commentary into the various places he visited both as a savvy tourist and a knowledgeable investor. He found several countries ripe for investment opportunities (notably China, South Africa, and New Zealand) and determined others, in the parlance of Wall Street, to be a "short sale." Some of his analysis is not original (e.g., his observations that the United States is becoming a "statist," quasisocialist state), but much of what he has to say is thought-provoking. Recommended for all public libraries with large nonfiction collections.

More great lessons from a true explorer--a true patriot--a financial "scientist"

Despite many comments in other reviews, this book is much, much, more than a travelogue...it is essential reading for all long term investors...moreover, it ought to be essential reading for all government officials who want to keep America great. After traveling around and seeing all these countries, it is hard to see how another human being could have acquired the scope of knowledge that Rogers now possesses...so his wisdom counts! Major lesson from this book include:

1)the major focus of government should be (besides defense, police, fire, etc.) to get out of the way and unleash the desire of the population to chase high return opportunities...but not to protect the population from competition

2)eliminate protectionism and subsides for all industries within the economy...allowing one's industries to take its lumps in the world wide competitive market...otherwise, those industries will not innovate to the degree needed to stay competitive on the world market

3)nothing in society is permanent...the most successful societies adapt to and embrace change and competition...the least successful ones--the ones that end up dying--reach a point of success...then get fat and happy and try to preserve their status at all costs

4)do NOT leave your finances in the hands of others...even Jim Rogers did this...and he had his money stolen out from under him!!

5)stable, long term relationships are invaluable...poor Jim travels around with this "young leggy blonde" (who my mom referred to as a "tart")...who he obviously loves...but who appears to have "hit the road" after the trip...too bad...

Required reading!

This should be required reading for any economics course! (or for global investing ...of course ;) My eyes are opened. Jim has accomplished something that may never be repeated. He completed an amazing land journey through territories of every kind on earth. He experienced the people, the lifestyles, the local markets, the capital markets, the currency markets and the black markets of the world. His experience relates cause and effect of political and economic policies of over fifty countries. He has travelled our global economic history and laid it all down in an clear, concise and exciting text that will have you churning paper as you roar through it.

I learned alot. I want more!

Remarkably gripping.

I was somewhat surprised at how engrossed I became in this. I enjoyed the travel descriptions in part because they were so brief---where some authors might have expanded to cover full chapters, Rogers writes a single paragraph. It's unlike many travel books, but has a delight of its own.
As for his views on investment opportunities, even his more outrageous ideas (Alaska, the Yukon, Western Canada and the North West US all seceding to create a new country?) are interesting for their novelty, while some of his observations make a lot of sense (I've long had his positive opinion of Botswana, and his theories of the reosurces of Siberia being exploited through Chinese labor and Japanese capital are not a crazy bet).

A helpful - and ENJOYABLE - book of fiction writing advice

No other book on writing I've read - and I've read a lot! - kept me chuckling throughout. I'd recommend this book for the laughs alone, but I can also recommend it as the fount of writing wisdom it entails.
Vorhaus not only explains the basic types of humor and the elements of a comic plot, but also lays out an excellent plotting structure useful for any type of fiction writing. Whether you merely want to add a few touches of humor to an angsty story, or you want to write the next comic blockbuster, this book will help you on your way.
P.S. Chapter 9 alone is worth the price of the book!

Simple, short, and useful

"The Comic Toolbox" is very to the point as to what comedy is, and how it is created. It outlines a basic structure so easy to use that anyone with a decent grasp of the english language can write a humorous skit or scene. Though, for my money, I would also get "Comedy writing step by step." It grasps far deeper than Vourhous's basic outline, and is very comprehensive. Use "Comic Toolbox" as a quick reference, but use "Step by Step" as a guide.

Good content, but Kindle edition not great...

Excellent content and every page completely relevant and well written. The biggest downside however, is the poor picture and table quality in the Kindle edition. Whether viewing on my Kindle 3, my retina display iPad or my HTC One the poor quality really is disappointing for this otherwise premium book. If you're looking for my recommendation: unless the publishers opt for higher resolution pics and images ( which I hope they would do... But doubt it at the same time) then rather get the print copy.

Math for CBP

I bought this book expecting alot from it. Yes, it did help alot, but there were some downs. This book had many mistakes, both arithmetic and grammatical. Sometimes the answers did not match their corresponding letters ( ex: A, B , C, D). And sometimes the answers were as confusing as the questions because it was missing explanations for the answers. Overall, I think it is a good book, the author and publisher should have made a better job of reviewing it before publishing it.

El libro tiene demasiados errores. Tienes la oportunidad de practicar algunos ejercicios pero la mayor�a tienen respuestas err�neas o las opciones que tiene como respuesta correcta no es la misma. En vez de aprender lo que vas a hacer es confundirte. Yo le� los reviews y me arriesgue al comprarlo pero me arrepiento. No lo recomiendo.

The book has too many errors. You get to practice some exercises but most have wrong answers or options whose correct answer is not the same. Instead of learning what you're going to do is get confused. I read the reviews and I risk it to buy it but I regret. Not recommended.

I'm no math wiz but...

...but I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) that some of the solutions were wrong (the numbers weren't the same, math rules had been ignored). While that didn't help my confidence any in the credibility of this book, I gave it 3 stars because if nothing else it is practice. I wish the book had also had a section of rules and equations but that wasn't anything I couldn't look up online or on the official cbp study guide.

Grade 7 Up—In the late 1700s and early 1800s, many Scottish lairds discovered that they could make money by leasing their land to English sheep farmers. As a result, thousands of poor Highlanders were removed from their homes. Roddy Macallan and his family are tenant farmers, and they have always relied on their laird to be a provider and protector. Now he is dead, and the greedy and cruel new man cares little for clan traditions and his responsibility for his people. He sends his brutal factor, Willie Rood, to burn out the villagers and take their livestock. Enraged, Roddy sneaks back to the village to find the family "Blessing" that his deceased mother always told stories about. He finds it, a valuable brooch given to an ancestor by Bonnie Prince Charlie, but Willie Rood steals it for the laird. Roddy is nearly beaten to death, but is saved by the outlaw Alan Dunbar, who then trains him as his apprentice. Enduring great peril, the men recover the brooch, escape the English Redcoats who've been sent after them, and make it to a settlement in North Carolina. The authors deftly weave historical facts into their action-packed adventure, and though the story is somewhat predictable, it is thoroughly engaging. They write in Scottish dialect and syntax, which readers should get the hang of fairly quickly. The Highlands are burning

This is told from the point of view of a young crofter whose family is evicted from their highland home to make room for Enlgish sheep. After generations of tenancy, the farmers' homes are burned and destroyed with little to no time to rescue their goods. Animals are seized and they are told to leave the area or face punishment.

I found this fascinating since family legend states that this was the reason one line of my ancestors left Scotland for Canada. The brutality of the wealthy toward the poor doesn't seem to have changed over the centuries. Even though this is a specific ethnic group in a specific situation, the truths are universal.

It is a page turning adventure and a coming-of-age story, as well as an historical chronicle of a shameful event in Scottish/English history.

Dumb. The only good news...it was free.

What isn't wrong with this book? Trite. Boring. Worst of all it is just dumb.
I can read the occasional fluff book. The fun chick lit. I hate, hate, hate when authors write dumb nonsense and try to slap it together and sell it as if it were a real book. This book is super short, really a long story.
**spoiler alerts***

The penthouse is the "largest and most expensive in the Washington DC area" and she is the assistant manager of the hotel.... and she is a law student at Georgetown. She is also socially inept, can't talk about sex, oh and virgin as well. she must have something going on to get an assistant manager job and the best hotel in DC. Right?

So, short story short, she gets manipulated into having "dinner" with the sheik. She finally puts her foot down by.... demanding to know if the sheik actually called the hotel chef and bartender to order the dinner himself or did he make his staff do it. Uh, this is the dinner he is forcing her to attend with him. What?

So on her "break" she goes to dinner....and has sex for first time. EVERYONE in hotel knows. They question her about the next day. She is annoyed by the questions and remarks that she is the youngest assistant manager at the hotel and "she wasn't going to sully her outstanding professional reputation by listening, or even acknowledging, the questions on the minds of every other staff member she passed."

Holy hell.

Talking about sleeping with a hotel guest 2 hours after meeting him, while on duty is sullying her reputation but actually having sex with said guest is not sullying her reputation?

Of course he pursues her. Guess what happens next to the virginal, naive law student/hotel manager. Guess.
Yes! She has lots of unprotected sex (cause she is too overwhelmed by her feelings to pay attention to protection) and gets pregnant.

How does she discover she is pregnant? Well while feeling sorry for herself (cause the sheik wanted to pay for law school and a new apartment and give her money like she is some kind of whore) she goes to her old nasty home (drunk mom bad childhood...blah, blah) she gets unexpectedly hungry so she walks two miles (yeah 2 miles) to a grocery store (while thinking about how stupid her plan was to go the old house) and buys... saltines and bologna. Weird. Right? She eats, walks and contemplates her SIX WEEK "relationship" with sheik. Throws up and nearly passes out and is saved by....guess...guess... Yes! The sheik.

So in Washington DC, in a poor neighborhood he saves her and then has a helicopter land. In some open field. In the middle of DC. Okay.

Then the author writes one the stupidest sentences I have ever read...

"When the helicopter landed in the open field, he carried Sabrina through the grass, unconcerned about possible snakes or other creatures. His main goal was to get her safe once again."

So he is not worried about dangerous snakes or other "creatures" (in DC?) he is only worried about her safety? Ummm. Did the author even read that sentence as she wrote it?

BTW.. she is "sleeping" from the time he saved her on the DC street, through the helicopter ride and of course aboard his private plane. Yup. 12 hours she slept... through all of that, not one moment of consciousness. Just sleep, sleep, sleep. Handy.

She wakes up in his country. Oh. no. She has a paper due the next day. Oh. no. An exam. Oh. no. A baby. What? Marry you? Be a princess and be fabulously wealthy? Live in an Arab country? (presumably with that sheik nonsense). Is it safe? Does she have to give up her citizenship? How do they treat women? Will she be the only wife? She considered her options...go back to school, work full time and be a single mom or stay here with the prince and have babies.

Of course. Babies and princess win.

Beyond stupid. I guess I can be thankful that the author did not 50 Shades it up.
Waste of time. Waste of money. Waste of reading. Waste of digital ink.
I want back my 20 minutes.

A distasteful beginning

I found the beginning of the story distasteful :
Sabrina, a law student, also works full time as an assistant manager in a luxury hotel. When the manager is unavailable, Sabrina meets a new guest, Samir, the head of state of some unnamed country. Samir falls in lust and demands that Sabrina have supper (and more) with him.

Sabrina does not want to go but is pushed by every hotel employee to attend Samir's wishes. I felt they were all pimping her. I also found in bad taste the reference from the concierge that he would be able to provide Samir with company for the night if it was required. Did we really came to the point that prostitutes are OK ? Not that they're in any way necessary as Sabrina then proceeds to bed Samir, whom she met all of three hours ago, losing her virginity in the process.

The middle part of the novella is fine. Sabrina gets her pluck back and Samir starts to transform into a reasonable human being. The ending, unfortunately, brings back all the arrogant aspects of Samir's character.

The story itself was good. The H and h were just alright. I was irritated by the fact that the h let all the hotel employees push her to compromise her own values and what she believed to be right. It felt a little disjointed after their night together, when she's back at the hotel. At no point did it explain she left in the middle of the night or anything. When she was upset that everyone "knew" what she had done, I thought it was because she was wearing the same clothes as she had the night before. It wasn't until she mentions going home to shower "again" that I realized she went home at all. And then up until Samir (the H, the Sheikh) mentions her leaving in the middle of the night, I didn't know that either. Especially since she mentions not eating the breakfast that was offered(?). I don't know, maybe I read that part wrong. The end I had a hard time understanding because of the h's actions concerning her schooling, but I guess maybe because of the situation she finds herself in, it is the only choice left to her.

I am one for recommending folks read a book and form their own opinions. For having been free, I can't complain that I wasted my money. And it wasn't THAT bad, so it wasn't really a waste of my time either. I just wish the characters had been more to my liking.

Dayum, this was hot. Love me some Leslie North and I have happily read all of her kindle books. I love the recipe she has for a great book; hot man, unsuspecting girl, lure of sex and some sort of incident to throw all of the ingredients together!

The ending was amazing! Not until the last few moments reading was I really, really sure we were going to get a happy ending! In fact, it was happy endings all around, and some new beginnings as well. There is enough untold story still waiting for us, so Ms. North should be more than busy preparing to tell us all about it. Erin and Kam - pardon me, His Majesty! - are married at last, and more weddings and love affairs are popping up like wildflowers in the Spring! And Sloan and his soldiers are keeping them all safe and adding so much to the stories. I can't wait to find out what's happening next.

The story lines were great but I thought the books were too short. They was a lot of males running around in this series. Ms North should have continued the series. The ending of book 3 says that there should be a book 4. If you are not currently writing additional book in the series then the ending in book 3 was a huge disappointment.

This book, now in its fourth edition, is the second in a series of three books that teach the fundamentals of embedded systems as applied to ARM� Cortex™-M microcontrollers. The three books are primarily written for undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students. They could also be used for professionals learning the ARM platform. The first book Embedded Systems: Introduction to ARM� Cortex™-M Microcontrollers is an introduction to computers and interfacing focusing on assembly language and C programming. This second book focuses on interfacing and the design of embedded systems. The third book Embedded Systems: Real-Time Operating Systems for ARM� Cortex™-M Microcontrollers is an advanced book focusing on operating systems, high-speed interfacing, control systems, and robotics.
An embedded system is a system that performs a specific task and has a computer embedded inside. Topics include microcontrollers, design, verification, hardware/software synchronization, interfacing devices to the computer, timing diagrams, real-time systems, data collection and processing, motor control, analog filters, digital filters, and real-time signal processing.
In general, the area of embedded systems is an important and growing discipline within electrical and computer engineering. The educational market of embedded system is dominated by simple microcontrollers like the PIC, 9S12, and 8051. This is because of their market share, low cost, and historical dominance. However, as problems become more complex, so must the systems that solve them. A number of embedded system paradigms must shift in order to accommodate this growth in complexity. First, the number of calculations per second will increase from about 1 million/sec to 1 billion/sec. Similarly, the number of lines of software code will also increase from 1000’s to 10 to 100 million. Thirdly, systems will involve multiple microcontrollers supporting many simultaneous operations. Lastly, the need for system verification will continue to grow as these systems are deployed into safety critical applications. These changes are more than a simple growth in size and bandwidth. These systems must employ parallel programming, DMA synchronization, real-time operating systems, fault tolerant design, priority interrupt handling, and networking. Consequently, it will be important to provide our students with these types of design experiences. The ARM platform is both low cost and provides the high performance features required in future embedded systems. The ARM market share is currently large and growing. Furthermore, students trained on the ARM will be equipped to design systems across the complete spectrum from simple to complex. The purpose of writing this book at this time is to bring engineering education into the 21st century.
This book employs many approaches to learning. It will not include an exhaustive recapitulation of the information in data sheets. First, it begins with basic fundamentals, which allows the reader to solve new problems with new technology. Second, the book presents many detailed design examples. These examples illustrate the process of design. There are multiple structural components that assist learning. Checkpoints, with answers in the back, are short easy to answer questions providing immediate feedback while reading. Simple homework, with answers to the odd questions on the web, provide more detailed learning opportunities. The book includes an index and a glossary so that information can be searched. The most important learning experience in a class like this are of course the laboratories. Each chapter has suggested lab assignments. More detailed lab descriptions are available on the web.
The book will cover embedded systems for the ARM� Cortex™-M with specific details on the LM3S811, LM3S1968,TM4C123 and TM4C1294. Although the solutions are specific for the TI LM3S and TM4C, it will be possible to use this book for other ARM derivatives.
