About the Author
James D. Morrow is A. F. K. Organski Collegiate Professor of World Politics and Research Professor at the Center for Political Studies, University of Michigan. He previously taught at the Graduate Institute of International Studies at Stanford University, the University of Rochester and Michigan State University. He is the author of Game Theory for Political Scientists, co-author of The Logic of Political Survival, and author of more than sixty articles in refereed journals and other publications. He was president of the Peace Science Society (International) in 2008-9. Morrow received the Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association in 1994 and has been a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution and an Advanced Research Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies for the Social Science Research Council.

Nice book on creating good habits...

When I first bought this book, I though it was a book solely focusing on how to be more patient with others. It is however also a book on how to develop patience in order to develop more grit and implement the habits to become more successful in life. This is because the “underlying attribute for long term goal achievement is patience”.
The book is quite detailed and the story-telling is built up very nicely so you follow the author closely in his argumentation. The book offers several assignments for you to become more self-aware and aids you in reaching your goals. I enjoyed the book even more as I understood the complete picture, and think it has a great value

This guidebook is excellent and helpful. By the help of this book I have learned about how to become a patient. Inside of this book I have found tons of helpful and effective techniques for developing self-discipline.

GREAT BOOK

I might be a calm person and have some patience but in many occasion I can’t control my temper or get nervous. This usually ends up with me yelling at my children just for inconsequential things and when I calm down and think about it again I realised that I was over reacting. I really wanted to learn to have more patience, to have more control of my temper especially with my own kids. This book was very helpful in this. It helped me to learn how to build new good habits to replace the bad ones.

Cheri Huber is the author of 19 books, including There Is Nothing Wrong with You, When You're Falling, Dive,and Time-Out for Parents. She founded the Mountain View Zen Center in Mountain View, California, and the Zen Monastery Practice Center in Murphys, California, and teaches in both communities. She travels widely and often, leading workshops and retreats around the United States and abroad, most recently in Costa Rica and Italy. She founded Living Compassion in 2003, a nonprofit group comprised of There Is Nothing Wrong With You Retreats (based on the book); Global Community for Peace: The Assisi Peace Project; The Africa Vulnerable Children Project; and Open Air Talk Radio, her weekly call-in radio show originating from Stanford University. Really makes you think

This big definitely makes you take a new, positive perspective on your life, and your journey. The workbook combines writing, drawing among other creative venues to help you dig a bit deeper into who you are, and what you want. Some of the activities take longer than others, and really depends on how much effort and time you're willing to give. Several activities can be done in one day. The questions posed are fairly simple, but the way each activity is tied together makes them more complex as a whole. While I have not completed the workbook, I do enjoy the activites, and feel more intropective from what I have completed.

The book is fairly thin, less than 1/2 inch thick. Very much like any other workbook you would have had in school. The paper inside is not noticibly thin, but markers and some pens do bleed through, but not enough to make the opposit pages unusable.

While the author makes it known that your drawings, writings ect. don't have to be perfect, if you do not have a creative side, or do not enjoy doodling and writing, this probably isn't the book for you.

David Loy is a professor on the Faculty of International Studies at Bunkyo University, Japan. He has been a student of Zen for over twenty-five years and is a qualified Zen teacher. He is the author of Lack and Transcendence: The Problem of Death and Life in Psychotherapy, Existentialism, and Buddhism and Nonduality: A Study in Comparative Philosophy, as well as numerous articles.

As an undergraduate student, focusing on Hindu Studies and Indian Philosophy, I wrote my senior thesis on comparative systems of nondualistic philosophy in Indian religion. As I grapppled with the idea of nonduality, trying to wrap my brain around the concept, trying to tie together all I had learned in my studies on Kashmir Shavism, Vedanta, and Tantric Buddhism, I was recommended Loy's book by my professor.
David Loy manages to connect western and eastern philsophy and psychology to create an interpretation of nonduality that resonates with the western mind. Loy strengthens his interpretation by setting out philosophically, steering psychologically, and reinforcing with literature. Loy's book is a delight to read, is easy to understand, and is thought-provoking throughout.
Included in this text is the most complete exposition of nonduality and eastern thought as pertaining to post modern literary theory, dealing mainly with Derrida. Few have attempted to correlate these apparentaly discordant traditions, and I beleive Loy does it best, re-presenting much of his scholarship in previous articles with new twists and interpretations, though never regurgitating old work.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in eastern thought; it makes an excellant introduction for the beginner and a place of growth for the intermediate. The text would also be of great value to anyone teaching eastern thought becuase it is so inclusive and clear-speaking. Its phenomenological-existential edge will make it appealing, breathing life into an amazing topic, which is so often presented in a poor and dry manner.

A very important book

I find this book truly amazing and I hope it receives all the attention it deserves. The term "nonduality" is mentioned again and again in books on Buddhism and Eastern philosophy. Here, the author makes an amazing discussion of what nonduality means, as far as word can express this.
This book is not "easy-reading" in all places, but it's very well worth the effort. The chapters on "nondual perception" and "deconstruction of dualism" are absolutely amazing. I have reread this book and parts of it many times, and will have to do so again.

David Loy has done a superb job of being true to the standards of academic comparative philosophy, true to the traditions, and true to direct pointing to transconceptual awareness, all at the same time--which is every bit as rare as it is desperately needed. But then, I would expect nothing less from a philosophy professor who is also a spiritual teacher in the Zen tradition. Don't pass this one up.

Essential for Development Studies

This book was (still is?) the core textbook for the Open University's Master-level course on Development Management (TU971). Whether you are new to development practice or a veteran with many years experience, this brings the most oft used development theories and terminology into one place, explaining their origins and their key concepts. After I started reading this book, I started realizing that the terminology was all around me in my work own work in development. Six years after reading the book the first time, I still refer to it frequently for my work. I'm not giving it five stars because it really does need to be updated for the post 911 world.

For years he reigned as the "master of the macabre," the man who massacred the class of '76 in Carrie and stalked Angie Dickinson in Dressed to Kill. By the mid-1980s De Palma found himself assaulting his audience and critics, daring them to watch a chainsaw enter a man's skull in Scarface and a power drill disembowel a defenseless woman in Body Double.

What drove De Palma to such extremes? In the late 1960s, he wanted to be the next Jean-Luc Godard and revolutionize American cinema. Instead, he found himself ostracized when Warner Bros. removed him from Get to Know Your Rabbit, his first Hollywood feature. De Palma sought the refuge of Alfred Hitchcock until the late 1970s (Sisters, Obsession), when his surreal approach to horror became a genre unto itself (Carrie, The Fury, Dressed to Kill). Ironically, just as De Palma achieved the success that his fellow Movie Brats George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg had enjoyed since the mid-1970s, he could not hide his resentment toward Hollywood. After battling with the MPAA in the 1980s, he gradually became part of the mainstream with the success of The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible, although he never suppressed his desire to make audiences aware of his camera-eye and his dark, penetrating worldview.

Brian De Palma: Interviews follows De Palma's fortunes as he makes the difficult transition from underground filmmaker to celebrity auteur. Despite his eclecticism, he remains tainted by his reputation for violent misogyny (he cast his then-wife, Nancy Allen, as a prostitute in three consecutive films), the blatant Hitchcock rip-offs that characterized his early work, and the notorious megaflop Bonfire of the Vanities, which derailed his career in the early '90s. These 19 interviews, drawn from major publications such as the New York Times and Esquire, specialty film publications, and even Web sites, don't shy away from the controversies surrounding DePalma's work. By turns evasive and confessional, the director voices his bitterness about Hollywood despite the fact that he has played the system cannily, making commercial blockbusters to get the green light for smaller, self-written efforts. This collection of interviews of Brian De Palma, the celebrated filmmaker, reads as an insightful window into the world of filmmaking--not only in the 1970's and 80's, but up till the 2000's where many view his film career to have reached a lull (some consider it to have occurred before this date). However, that is not a detriment with this collection, in fact I found that the book was great, going from interview to interview, each conducted as a new film was coming out (i.e., one for Sisters, one for Phantom of the Paradise, one for Carrie..so on and so forth).

While this book may seem dated since it's last interview was around the time Mission to Mars debuted, it really isn't. Look at Truffaut's interviews with Hitchcock, as relevant as ever. However, if you are looking for a newer interview with the great De Palma, you can purchase the Criterion's DVD or BluRay copy of De Palma's masterpiece, Blow Out, which includes an hour long interview conducted by Noah Baumbach recorded in 2010 or 2011, which serves as nice companion piece to this collection.

I enjoyed reading this, and if you love the films of De Palma...or even if you don't, it will give you perhaps a better understanding of who the man is and the way he thinks. I recommend this book. Highly.

Great collection of interviews

Brian de Palma is my favorite director and this book reprints several interviews done at different points of his career. He comes off, not surprisingly, as a very intelligent man and offers insightful remarks about his movies, directing, and cinematic art in general. It's interesting to see how his perspective over some of his films varies throughout the years. Recommended to all fans. Also, I can say the only other book I've read about De Palma with similar quality to this one is the interviews by Blumenfeld & Vauchaud, which you should also get.

This is an excellent survey of interviews with De Palma over the years, and they prove a helpful guide for navigating his cinema and his interests (no wonder that Chris Dumas' UN-AMERICAN PSYCHO is so beholden to these interviews). A must-read for any De Palma fan.

This book will get you all hot.

The first story I read in this collection is about two men falling in love (or lust) and doing dirty deed that turns any reader on. Even though this book contains heavy sex, the enthusiasm of the stories and the characters were fully kept. The collection of stories is fascinating and some are in fact humorous to me. I enjoyed reading this collection. In my own opinion, this book works an aphrodisiac. For those who are looking for a book with character and relationship development, not all sex, I’d recommend this.

Nice story lines

Hot, hot, hot, a couple of books in these bundle is quite easy to read, but a couple of stories are too graphic for my sensibilities. It may take time to get used to it, but if you are into this kind of kinky stuff I am sure you will enjoy this bundle. Nice story lines, a little bit of mystery, some twist and turns that will surely get you hooked, yes including the kinky stuff.

My favorite jQuery book

I have purchased / borrowed other books on the subject but this one did it for me. I'm only four chapters in and already more confident using the jQuery online documentation and writing much more efficient, succinct code.

This is my first title from this publisher / authors. I am very happy with this purchase because...

1. Examples / sample code had just the right amount of detail. Another book I purchased assumed the reader had never programmed before which resulted in wordy, overly detailed explanations and examples that really tried my patience.
2. NOT a cookbook. Explained HOW things worked better than most books. Some just tell you what method to use without explaining why that method works in a certain way.
3. The run-in-browser labs were very helpful. Seeing the results of jQuery selection and manipulation in real time allowed me to experiment with the content rapidly and without writing code from scratch.
4. In the print edition there is a coded coupon to download the digital version for free.

Note: The Chapt 3 lab runs in iframe. By default browsers won't open a local file in an iframe so you will need some sort of security workaround. Since I already had python installed I opted to run a local web server from the example code folder. (one liner --> python -m SimpleHTTPServer). There are also some possibilities for starting a browser from command line with switches turning that security feature off. You will probably need to Google a solution for your browser / operating system to get this to work. It will be worth the effort. It would be nice to see some detailed options / instructions on the book's website and / or just to have this lab hosted online somewhere.

I read this book pretty much from cover to cover

A lot of technical computer books are littered with typos and errors not to mention not working example codes. I read this book pretty much from cover to cover, and I cannot recall any major typo or error in writing. Kudos to authors and reviewers for that. I have tested every single example codes provided, and it all worked as expected. You may say that is the way it should be. But I have purchased many computer books with non-working examples, and I had to figure out how to make it work while comforting myself with the notion that having a book is still better than nothing. In that sense, this book is exceptional.
