A beautiful literary Renaissance of the Byzantine Empire
By Wolf-Dieter Schleuning
Since Gibbon’s “Fall of the Roman Empire” Byzantium has suffered from a bad reputation. It is primarily remembered for subtle theological disputes, sometimes concerning only one letter ( Homoousios vs. Homoiousios in the controversy about the human and divine nature of Christ) or one word ( “filioque” the Western addition to the Nicene creed considered anathema by the Orthodox). Nevertheless the results of these disputes are a hallmark of Christianity even today. In German, the term Byzantine is a paraphrase of bizarre court rituals like the obligatory proskynesis in front of the emperor that survives in the Muslim prayer tradition. However, the Byzantine or late Eastern Roman Empire had also a glamorous side which Carol Strickland brings back to life in her historical novel "The Eagle and the Swan ". The heroine and main character is Theodora, the daughter of a circus bear keeper who started her career as a strip dancer and prostitute and ended up as Empress and one of the most influential women of late antiquity. Theodora is credited for important social reforms that improved the life of the poor and had a mitigating influence on the absurd theological disputes that split the empire. The novel, constructed as a story within a story in the tradition of Chaucer and Boccaccio, is full of excitement and crackling eroticism, painting a vivid picture of the time in which the Roman Empire under Theodora's husband Justinian briefly rose to old grandeur after the Goths in Italy and the Vandals in Africa had been defeated by his generals Belisarius and Narses. in Theodora’s times Constantinople was the biggest city in the world, with trade relations reaching from China to Scandinavia. The church of Haghia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) was the world’s largest building. The palace guard consisted of Vikings (Varaegians) that had migrated to Constantinople from Scandinavia through today’s Russia (a runic graffiti can still be seen today in the Haghia Sophia). Hence Carol Strickland’s novel is not only highly entertaining but also profoundly erudite and offers the reader a thrilling lesson in history. Some historic novels have become world bestsellers, e.g. “Sinuhe the Egyptian” by Mika Waltari or I Claudius, Emperor and God by Robert Ranke Graves. In my mind Carol Strickland’s work has a similar potential.

A true page-turner!
By Fran Zak
When I first saw the Amazon entry for "The Eagle and the Swan," I was intrigued with the idea of a novel which takes place in the 6th Century in a far off land with a little-known history. Once I started it, I couldn't stop. I can't recommend it highly enough; it's a real page turner. Carol Strickland's tale of 6th Century love, lust, court intrique, and the rise to power and position of two extraordinary commoners, is riveting. Theodora was a very early and admirable feminist: capable, smart, shrewd, savvy, and...beautiful as well. She had it all. Strickland depicts Theodora, as well as Justinian, as complex, multi-faceted characters who prevail in a highly charged political context.

I am also impressed by this "new face of publishing," a digital book with links to all sorts of related materials. Reading the material on or from the links provides the reader with a fuller and richer 'picture' and understanding of the text. The links also explain and clarify much of the language and settings of the book. The interactive book; what a great idea; a very "today" departure from traditional publishing in our tech-driven world. Readers of "The Eagle and the Swan" are in for a treat; try it; you'll be glad you did.

EAGLE AND THE SWAN IS VERY GOOD!
By Isaac Dye
It's a book rife with detail and passion. If you like historical fiction this book hits on all cylinders. The level of detail in terms of prose and historical relevance is engaging. And THEN the plot is what's moving. The love and lust combined with a compelling story, taking on universal themes from a cross section of history, makes for a gripping work. Although I might lean more towards fantasy and science fiction, this book engaged me from a more thoughtful and deliberate perspective, focusing on the power of desire and the sometimes overwhelming force of human relationships. I really, really enjoyed the book.

Great overview, especially for the young reader
By Claude Buettner
I decided to give the book to my grand nephew rather than my brother-in-law who loves his Jeeps. The book is packed with facts and sidebars presented in a very modern format but lacks the historical depth that I was hoping for to thrill a knowledgeable Jeep follower.

Gore Vidal: A Critical Companion (Critical Companions to Popular Contemporary Writers), by Susan C. Baker, Curtis S. Gibson

Gore Vidal has been entertaining, and occasionally outraging, the American public for fifty years. In the course of his long career, Vidal has set new intellectual and artistic standards for American historical fiction and has also established himself in the first rank of contemporary social satirists. This is the first full-length study to include Vidal's most recent novels and the first designed to meet the needs of the general reader as well as students of contemporary literature. It includes discussions of Lincoln, Empire, Hollywood, and Live from Golgotha, as well as his earlier novels. Baker and Gibson show that while Vidal's novels are tremendously entertaining, they are also serious examinations of a recurring theme―the decline of the West in general and the decline of the United States in particular.

A biographical sketch of the writer precedes a general discussion of Vidal's early novels. Each of the following chapters examines an individual novel, from Julian (1964) to Live from Golgotha (1992), with special emphasis on artistic development and historical and intellectual context. To help the reader understand the recurring themes in Vidal's fiction, Baker and Gibson group the novels by type. First are the historical fictions, those of the ancient world (Julian, Creation), and the American Chronicles, Vidal's family saga of the United States over the course of its history. Second are the social satires, what Vidal calls his inventions, of which the best known is Myra Breckinridge. The discussion of each novel includes sections on plot and character development, thematic issues, narrative style, and an alternative critical approach from which to read the novel. A complete bibliography of Vidal's fiction, select bibliography of his other works, and bibliography of reviews and criticism of the works examined complete the book and will be helpful to students, librarians, and adult book discussion participants. This long-needed up-to-date study of Gore Vidal is a key purchase by secondary school and public libraries.

Great Primer Book Helpful for Conversation and Friendship
By Edward J. Vasicek
I am a pastor who has a gift of gab and a number of friends, some of them close. My sister (who is the ultimate friendly person) and I were raised by parents who knew how to converse well, so we picked up these skills in a natural setting. We are both real schmoozers. My wife is also highly relational. So, unlike many self-help book reviewers, I am reviewing from a different perspective: I did not read this book for personal growth reasons (I do read books on other subjects to address my weak spots, however), but to try to help instruct others who struggle here.
For many years, I have dealt with folks who wanted to learn to converse and make friends. When one is brought up with those skills, it becomes difficult to enumerate exactly what it is we talkers do. When I read, "How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends," I said to myself, "Yep. This is a lot of what we (and many other people strong in this area) do." Gabor has organized and put into outline form the most basic principles of conversation and friendship initiation. And that is a whole lot more helpful than saying, "I don't know. We just do it!"
Gabor also allows for differing personalities and relational styles. Although we may have to leave our comfort zone (in time, change becomes comfortable), we need to be who we are and converse with others based upon who they are.
Please understand that this book is limited in its scope. It can help people initiate friendships, but it does not direct one toward relational depth. This book can help folks make a number of casual friends but not necessarily close friends. For deeper communication, I suggest William Backus' book, "Telling Each Other the Truth," a volume that addresses matters like conflict resolution, honesty, etc. Gabor's book is not really intended to guide you into relational depth. It does a great job for its intent: helping you chat better and initiate the early stages of friendship. For some folks, their instincts may kick in at that point. Others will need to study further.
The other limitation of this book (and there is no way to avoid it) is that the directives can be overwhelming because of their sheer volume. My advice is to choose a few areas to work on. Once those practices are incorporated and become second nature, then it is time to add a few more. In a sense, the book is arranged in order of importance, with the early chapters being the most crucial to master. I recommend starting at the beginning.
In addition to Gabor's insights, I suggest hanging around and imitating those who seem to have it together in these departments. There is nothing quite like seeing conversation in action and then telling oneself to "go and do likewise." It may seem awkward at first, but, in time, it can become second nature. Some folks (who have difficulty choosing the right words) might even consider practicing a conversation in an empty room, almost memorizing a script.
On quotable section reads, "Most shy people take the passive role when it comes to starting conversation. They wait and wait and wait, hoping someone will come along and start a conversation with them..."
He emphasizes that communication consists mostly of body language, then tone or voice, and, lastly, words.
Here is some simplistic but crucial advice, "Use plenty of eye contact, smile, and, above all, keep your arms uncrossed and your hands away from your face."
The book consists of 15 chapters divided into 4 sections. The sections are: Starting Your Conversation with Confidence. Continuing Your Conversation with Wit and Charm, Ending Your Conversation with a Great Impression, and Boosting Your Conversation to the Next Level.
The last chapter lists his 50 main points, some of which include, "Be the first to say hello, Introduce yourself to others, Show others you are listening by restating their comments, and Beware of open and closed body language."
This book is not rocket science (though filled with details), but it is a good place to start. Although I consider myself strong in the conversation department, I admit that I did pick up a pointer or two. Go for it.

Step 1- Accept you have a problem, step 2- read this book!
By Amazon Customer
Now before anyone can change how they are they have to accept they have a problem and to really want to change it. Once I realized that I had few friends and I had trouble commmunicating with others I went on a journey to find help. I found help in this book.
"How To Start A Conversation And Make Friends" explains all of the simple things which can be done to have an outstanding effect on your relationships. With this book you learn how to master the art of conversation. By doing this you get to have more friends and better friends. People will like you more and you will find people you like.
I noticed that I was being a much better conversationalist after reading the first few chapters! The book is very easy to understand and I flew right through it. Although it is easy to understand it has a lot of info so you have to pay attention to every tidbit. I reviewed a few chapters cause I felt I may have missed something important. When reading the book I found myself saying "Why didn't I think of that?". Everything just seems so logical. We have so many opportunities we just miss and we make people think we don't want to talk and we fail to see how foolish we are. Who would have thought that a smile, a nod of the head, and having open arms would make people approach you! Its so simple and yet we fail to do it. Why didn't I learn this in school?
I often feel like I am talking too much about myself. I will ask questions to show interest for other people, but I still feel like I am being egocentric when the conversation ball is in my hand and I am talking about myself. I don't think the book addressed this..
Regardless of the fact that it did not address everyting I highly reccommend this book to anyone who often finds themself at a loss for words, feels uncomfortable while talking, is shy, or just wants to have better conversations. Buy the book and refrence it when you feel that your conversations have problems.
Reading this book completely changed my life. I have more friends and I feel better about the friends I have. They seem to like me more and I am learning a lot about them which I like.
tip: You can view the first two chapters of this book on amazon.com for free just go to the picture of the cover and click "look inside". I bet you that these two chapters are enough to make you want to read the book and even be a better conversationalist! If you didn't get anything out of reading these two chapters then I would guess this book is not for you.

An incredibly helpful book
By A Customer
I bought this book based on the recommendations I read here and I was not disappointed. The book is easy to read and I finished it within an hour. After reading it I can definitely say that it provided me with some tips on improving my conversation skills. I found the section on how to start conversations very useful. The book also covers how to become more receptive, how to keep a conversation going, how to keep a balance between talking and listening and also gives ideas on how to meet friends.
One concept the book does not cover is how to deal with folks who interrupt you. At my workplace, it is common for 2 or 3 people - at a meeting - to continually interrupt me or whoever is talking and provide their input. At times you can have several different communication threads going on because of this. The book also does not cover how the tone of your voice can effect your communication. If you speak to softly or with a monotone voice, others can find you boring. Overall, this book is a great starter book.

A Guide to Plane Algebraic Curves (Dolciani Mathematical Expositions), by Keith Kendig

This Guide is a friendly introduction to plane algebraic curves. It emphasizes geometry and intuition, and the presentation is kept concrete. You'll find an abundance of pictures and examples to help develop your intuition about the subject, which is so basic to understanding and asking fruitful questions. Highlights of the elementary theory are covered, which for some could be an end in itself, and for others an invitation to investigate further. Proofs, when given, are mostly sketched, some in more detail, but typically with less. References to texts that provide further discussion are often included.

Computer algebra software has made getting around in algebraic geometry much easier. Algebraic curves and geometry are now being applied to areas such as cryptography, complexity and coding theory, robotics, biological networks, and coupled dynamical systems. Algebraic curves were used in Andrew Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, and to understand string theory, you need to know some algebraic geometry. There are other areas on the horizon for which the concepts and tools of algebraic curves and geometry hold tantalizing promise. This introduction to algebraic curves will be appropriate for a wide segment of scientists and engineers wanting an entrance to this burgeoning subject.

Review
Algebraic curves have regained a prominent position in mathematics. In light of their importance, the goal of this book is to provide a reasonable understanding of algebraic curves and their use. Beginning with standard curves (polynomial, parametric, conic, and user defined), Kendig expands the study by first shrinking the plane to a disk by adjoining points at infinity, and then shifting the domain from real to complex numbers to establish Bezout's theorem. Given this context, the study shifts further to determining the topological properties of algebraic curves, relating genus to a polynomial's degree, investigating singularities, and using compact Riemann surfaces. Throughout, the author emphasizes the geometry and intuitive aspects of algebraic curves, without delving into a tedious chain of proofs. He briefly considers applications of algebraic curves, ranging from Andrew Wiles's special use of elliptic curves in his proof of Fermat's last theorem to their use in cryptography, dynamical systems, and robotics. Readers should be familiar with basic ideas from geometric topology, complex analysis, and abstract algebra. Since Kendig developed the content as a guide rather than a textbook, no problem sets are included, but the author does suggest appropriate textbooks in a bibliography. --J. Johnson, CHOICE Magazine

This book is a straightforward and simple introduction to plane algebraic curves and would be of interest to anyone wanting a good overview of the subject. The material could also serve as a useful supplement for students taking an introductory course on algebraic curves or for mathematicians who would like to learn about the subject. Even though the book is written as a guide, readers will need some basic understanding of complex analysis, field theory, and topology to comprehend the subject matter completely.

The book is informal in its approach and focuses on building intuition through a variety of pictures and clarifying examples without becoming mired in detailed proofs and exercises. Chapter 1 explores algebraic curves in the real plane; in subsequent chapters, the canvas expands to include the complex numbers. The book's final chapters focus more on the geometric properties of algebraic curves and conclude with a foray into the topic of Riemann surfaces.

A Guide to Plane Algebraic Curves is an accessible and well-written book that anyone with an interest in this beautiful subject will surely appreciate and find useful. --Marc Michael, Mathematics Teacher

An absolutely great book intended for curious undergraduates or non-experts
By slizard
An absolutely great book intended for curious undergraduates or non-experts. Assumes basically just a solid knowledge of calculus and yet manages to take you far, in a very natural way! Focuses on main ideas which are also tied with other areas of math (e.g topology or computer visualization). Very entertaining while not simplistic at all. A true gem.

Start the Duddle-mania Now
By Pop Bop
It's not at all hard to understand why kids and adults are so keen on Jonny Duddle's two pirate picture books. I would second all of the glowing reviews about the appealing artwork, cheerful vibe, and subtle positive messages in those books.

But, be alert to the next step. Duddle has moved from picture books to heavily illustrated chapter books featuring the Matilda and Jim characters that little readers love from this picture book. So, once you've read this book a zillion times you can move your growing-up reader to "The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon" chapter book and follow even more pirate adventure. That's a great idea and a nice way to have a series grow up along with its fans.

Instant Favorite from a Pirate Fan
By Andi
My four year old son has been a pirate fanatic for about a year, so we have about 25 pirate books. I had pre-ordered this for his birthday, even though the release date was about a month later. We have The Pirate Cruncher as well, and we love it. So I figured this book would surely be as good. And it is!

I am always impressed when truly talented children's authors can rhyme stories and mix in humor and sentiment. The illustrations are so colorful, vibrant and cute without being too childish. It's the perfect length as well, so my son is satisfied when we're done, and the story isn't lacking for anything.

I'm excited and hopeful that Johnny Duddle will write another great pirate tale! We'd like to see the Jolly Rogers take on the Pirate Cruncher!

No, no, no!
By A. Williams
I should have believed the reviews I read on this but I really wanted a pirate book, and the illustrations were great, so I bought it anyway. What a mistake! The neighbors stereotype the pirates and don't want anything to do with them. Their attitudes remind one of something out of the 1950s. Of course, everything changes when the pirates leaves each of them gold. The story was so appalling that I actually made up a story to go with the pictures, rather than reading the text to my granddaughters. I didn't even want to donate the book because I don't think it's appropriate for any children. With so many wonderful picture books to choose from, do yourself a favor and pass on this one.
