Great book and easy read. I really enjoyed this book since it provides a comprehensive guide to mobile testing. It covers almost all the aspects and challenges of mobile testing, its techniques, tools any many other important things as well. As a telecommunications professional I find the book pragmatic from start to end and including many tips which are I think very useful and practical to every level of testers and mobile application developers who are seeking a quick guide to mobile testing.

Good tutorial on and selection of recipes solving problems with SQL

Ultimately, the goal of this book is to give you a glimpse of what can be done using SQL outside of what is considered the typical SQL problem domain. This text is unique in that the target audience is wide, incorporating all levels of SQL programmers as well as those who are completely unfamiliar with SQL.

Both complex and simple solutions are provided, and solutions for five different vendors are available when a common solution does not exist. These five databases are DB2 v.8, Oracle Database 10g (with the exception of a handful of recipes, the solutions will work for Oracle8i Database and Oracle9i Database as well), PostgreSQL 8, SQL Server 2005 and MySQL 5. All of the examples are built around a small set of tables containing employee data. This helps the reader get familiar with the example data, so that, having become familiar with the data, you can focus on the technique that each recipe illustrates.

Chapter 1, Retrieving Records, introduces very simple queries. Examples include how to use a WHERE clause to restrict rows from your result set, providing aliases for columns in your result set, using an inline view to reference aliased columns, using simple conditional logic, limiting the number of rows returned by a query, returning random records, and finding NULL values. Most of the examples are very simple, but some of them appear in later more complex recipes, so it's a good idea to read this chapter if you're relatively new to SQL or aren't familiar with any of the examples listed for this chapter.

Chapter 2, Sorting Query Results, introduces recipes for sorting query results. The ORDER BY clause is introduced and is used to sort query results. Examples increase in complexity ranging from simple, single-column ordering, to ordering by substrings, to ordering based on conditional expressions.

Chapter 3, Working with Multiple Tables, introduces recipes for combining data from multiple tables. If you are new to SQL or are a bit rusty on joins, this is a good chapter to read before going on to Chapter 5 and later. Joining tables is what SQL is all about; you must understand joins to be successful. Examples in this chapter include performing both inner and outer joins, identifying Cartesian productions, basic set operations (set difference, union, intersection), and the effects of joins on aggregate functions.

Chapter 4, Inserting, Updating, Deleting, introduces recipes for inserting, updating, and deleting data, respectively. Most of the examples are very straightforward, perhaps even pedestrian. Nevertheless, operations such as inserting rows into one table from another table, the use of correlated subqueries in updates, an understanding of the effects of NULLs, and knowledge of new features such as multi-table inserts and the MERGE command are extremely useful for your toolbox.

Chapter 5, Metadata Queries, introduces recipes for getting at your database metadata. It's often very useful to find the indexes, constraints, and tables in your schema. The simple recipes here allow you to gain information about your schema. Additionally, "dynamic" SQL examples are shown here as well, i.e., SQL generated by SQL.

Chapter 6, Working with Strings, introduces recipes for manipulating strings. SQL is not known for its string parsing capabilities, but with a little creativity, usually involving Cartesian products, along with the vast array of vendor-specific functions, you can accomplish quite a bit. Some of the more interesting examples include counting the occurrences of a character in a string, creating delimited lists from table rows, converting delimited lists and strings into rows, and separating numeric and character data from a string of alphanumeric characters.

Chapter 7, Working with Numbers, introduces recipes for common number crunching. You'll learn how easily window functions solve problems involving moving calculations and aggregations. Examples include creating running totals; finding mean, median, and mode; calculating percentiles; and accounting for NULL while performing aggregations.

Chapter 8, Date Arithmetic, is the first of two chapters dealing with dates. Being able to perform simple date arithmetic is crucial to everyday tasks. Examples include determining the number of business days between two dates, calculating the difference between two dates in different units of time (day, month, year, etc.), and counting occurrences of days in a month.

Chapter 9, Date Manipulation, is the second of the two chapters dealing with dates. In this chapter you will find recipes for some of the most common date operations you will encounter in a typical work day. Examples include returning all days in a year, finding leap years, finding first and last days of a month, creating a calendar, and filling in missing dates for a range of dates.

Chapter 10, Working with Ranges, introduces recipes for identifying values in ranges, and for creating ranges of values. Examples include automatically generating a sequence of rows, filling in missing numeric values for a range of values, locating the beginning and end of a range of values, and locating consecutive values.

Chapter 11, Advanced Searching, introduces recipes that are crucial for everyday development and yet sometimes slip through the cracks. These recipes are not any more difficult than others, yet many developers make very inefficient attempts at solving the problems these recipes solve. Examples from this chapter include finding knight values, paginating through a result set, skipping rows from a table, finding reciprocals, selecting the top n records, and ranking results.

Chapter 12, Reporting and Warehousing, introduces queries typically used in warehousing or generating complex reports. Examples include converting rows into columns and vice versa (cross-tab reports), creating buckets or groups of data, creating histograms, calculating simple and complete subtotals, performing aggregations over a moving window of rows, and grouping rows based on given units of time.

Chapter 13, Hierarchical Queries, introduces hierarchical recipes. Regardless of how your data is modeled, at some point you will be asked to format data such that it represents a tree or parent-child relationship. This chapter provides recipes accomplishing these tasks. Creating tree-structured result sets can be cumbersome with traditional SQL, so vendor-supplied functions are particularly useful in this chapter. Examples include expressing a parent-child relationship, traversing a hierarchy from root to leaf, and rolling up a hierarchy.

Chapter 14, Odds 'n' Ends, is a collection of miscellaneous recipes that didn't fit into any other problem domain, but that nevertheless are interesting and useful. This chapter is different from the rest in that it focuses on vendor-specific solutions only. This is the only chapter of the book where each recipe highlights only one vendor. In some cases, though, you'll be able to easily tweak a solution provided in this chapter to work for a platform not covered in the recipe.

Appendix A, Window Function Refresher, is a window function refresher along with a solid discussion of groups in SQL. Window functions are new to most, so it is appropriate that this appendix serves as a brief tutorial. Additionally, the use of GROUP BY in queries is a source of confusion for many developers. This chapter defines exactly what a SQL group is, and then proceeds to use various queries as proofs to validate that definition. The chapter then goes into the effects of NULLs on groups, aggregates, and partitions. Lastly, you'll find discussion on the more obscure and yet extremely powerful syntax of the window function's OVER clause (i.e., the "framing" or "windowing" clause).

Appendix B, Rozenshtein Revisited, is a tribute to David Rozenshtein, author of "The Essence of SQL". Appendix B focuses on some of the queries presented in "The Essence of SQL", and provides alternative solutions using window functions (which weren't available when The Essence of SQL was written) for those queries.

I highly recommend this book for anyone working with or interested in working with SQL. However, you should already be familiar with the theory behind database management or you will have trouble with this book.

Helped Me (a SQL Newbie) Deliver Cmplex SQL Reports

I was tasked with deliverying 6 key-performance-indicator (KPI) using SQL and Crystal Reports and an Oracle database. And for three disparate areas in the world (USA, Singapore, and The Netherlands).
Sure, I could write a 'SELECT' statement or perform and 'UPDATE'.
But, I did not know how to approach SQL as being a 'complete' solution for record selection.
The Crystal Reports portion was not too much trouble.
I was using the PL/SQL environment for creating the SQL. Oracle 10g.

Mr. Molinaro's book was instrumental in having me develop what turned out to be some rather complex SQL.
It took awhile to get to use SQL's window functions. But, the author's presentation/explanation made them more than approachable---and quite useful.
I liked the explanations that covered the multiple vendors' database engines.
I will make no pretense of having reached SQL knowledge 'nirvana'--However, there was more than one time where I was out of ideas on how to get/count certain data----The SQL Cookbook did its job by showinge 'yet another way' to approach a pressing problem with a solution.
And one can gain a deep understanding of how SQL works. Always a plus for anyone that is new to an environment.
If there was something like a SQL University, this book seems to be text that would work very well for giving students more than enough 'footing' to face the 'real' world. It did for me.
I am more than pleased to have this book as part of my SQL 'library.'

Other uses for this book

Majority of the cookbooks cater to seasoned programmers so they can quickly lookup a solution without having to reinvent the wheel. However, this particular cookbook can also be used by less experienced programmers as part of "learning by example" methodology.

After learning the sql basics, I had decided to purchase this text. I would read the problem statement and then try to implement the solution by myself. I would compare my solution to that of the author's. Or in certain cases, cheat by copying the given solution. It took me 3+ months to try each and every problem in the text, but in the end, it definitely helped to improve my sql code reading, designing, and coding skills.

I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in mastering any flavor of sql.

Many of these essays are often cited by researchers but have been till now unobtainable. Three of these texts have never been published before. Editor Michael Cartwright has contributed a substantial introduction on the Yoderian project, and a select bibliography prepared by Mark Nation catalogs Yoder's writings—published and unpublished—on ecclesiology and ecumenism.

About the Author
John Howard Yoder (1927-1997) taught ethics and theology as a professor at Notre Dame University and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary. He received his doctorate from the University of Basel, Switzerland, and was a member of the Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana.

Insightful, logical, compelling, but not conclusive!

As a collection of essays and presentations by Dr. Yoder, one must remember that each section is intended to stand alone leading to much repetition and incohesiveness.

Divided into two parts, the first dealing with the scriptural reality of God's people is more useful. Dr. Yoder presents a strong argument of what the church of God should look like, act like, and think like. He thoroughly demonstrates the absurdity of the Constantinian view and later Reformed view of church and state, owing much of his insight to the Anabaptists who maintained that one's citizenship is in Heaven and not of earth, nor within its governments. Historically, he proves that when the church is independent and separate from the world's affairs, its witness is increased a hundredfold. Although his points are made adequately, it would still be more prudent for Mr. Yoder to premise his argument from Scripture more abundantly.

The second half on the ecumenical view of the church is inspiring but, in reality, far too optimistic than will probably be achieved in our lifetime. He concedes with the Restoration view of Campbell and others that no Christian is excluded from the universal church except those who choose to support their division and differences upon later creeds rather than the authority of God's word. But Dr. Yoder does not continue to the conclusions necessary to achieve this, instead leaving the reader to conclude this himself. This may help not ostracize many, but it allows Christians to advertise their ecumenicality without having to concede to its necessary inferences and put these into actual practice.

Overall, this book is lengthy and at times difficult to understand, but worth the investment of time and most certainly worth consideration, especially by the "leaders" of current Christian circles.

If you enjoy a book with humon, drama , and Christian ethics at a time in America where people black and white were trying to find themselves then you should really enjoy Blue Ruby. If you enjoy a story with juicy detail and twist this is it. This writer has me on edge waiting for her next Novel!

Brings Infrastructure Management to a New Level

The infrastructure management approach that the authors give in this book incorporates practices from systems (and software) engineering, and is a blueprint for success. The objectives are: (1) end-to-end management with no gaps in ownership, (2)cost efficiencies through reuse and component-based strategies, (3)holistic view that looks at business, operational and technology (instead of the common 'technology only' view), and adaptability (an infrastructure that is managed to long range goals, but can be quickly adapted to emerging and immediate business needs).
How the authors meet these objectives is by identifying physical, functional and interface components that make up the infrastructure and integrating them into a service-oriented framework. This is consistent with component-based software engineering, and it is a remarkably good fit to infrastructure management. Moreover, the authors introduce patterns, also borrowed from software and systems engineering disciplines, to map business requirements to design in an efficient manner that promotes reuse. Another advantage of patterns is this approach captures knowledge (something not directly pointed out in the book). If you're not familiar with process patterns the book I recommend for infrastructure professionals is More Process Patterns by Scott Ambler. This is the second of a two book set and it directly addresses patterns that are related to infrastructure (the first book, Process Patterns, is more focused on software engineering).
The two chapters I liked the most are 4, Developing Adaptive Services, and 5, Services Starter Kit. These chapters tie services to infrastructure and go into fine detail about how to integrate services and the underlying technology. I especially like the way the authors use multiple life cycle management for each layer in the infrastructure. Chapters 6 (Processes and Methods) and 7 (Packaging and People) neatly pull together the preceding chapters into a coherent, process-oriented strategy. The single appendix is also valuable because it gives a comprehensive component catalog. This catalog can be used as the basis of the infrastructure blueprint as well as the foundation of an encompassing asset management initiative.

About the Author
William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has carried out original research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of numerous publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in media intended for the general public. His books include The Original Vermonters, coauthored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He also served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Besides teaching and writing, Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and nonprofessional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. He served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in an important court case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland was named University Scholar by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine. He serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine's Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).

Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University. Academically trained at half a dozen Dutch and U.S. universities, he previously taught at Radboud University (Netherlands), as well as Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine, and was a visiting professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. Named a Distinguished University Teaching Scholar, he received numerous honors for his outstanding academic teaching, including the Presidential Award in 1999, Carnegie Professor of the Year for Kansas in 2006, and the AAA/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology in 2010. His fieldwork focuses on indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere, and he has long served as an advocacy anthropologist on land claims and other native rights. In that capacity, Dr. Prins has been a key expert witness in both the U.S. Senate and Canadian courts. His numerous academic publications appear in seven languages, and his books include The Mi'kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival. Also trained in filmmaking, he was president of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and coproduced award-winning documentaries. He has been the visual anthropology editor of American Anthropologist, co-principal investigator for the U.S. National Park Service, international observer in Paraguay's presidential elections, and a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Dana Walrath, an award-winning writer, artist and anthropologist, is a faculty member of University of Vermont's College of Medicine. After earning her PhD in medical and biological anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught there and at Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in paleoanthropology through her work on the evolution of human childbirth. She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. Her books include Aliceheimer's, a graphic memoir, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel. She developed a novel curriculum in medical education at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine that brings humanism, anthropological theory and practice, narrative medicine, and professionalism skills to first-year medical students. Dr. Walrath also has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has exhibited her artwork in North America and Europe. Her recent work in the field of graphic medicine combines anthropology with memoir and visual art. Spanning a variety of disciplines, her work has been supported by diverse sources such as the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Vermont Studio Center, the Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She spent 2012-2013 as a Fulbright Scholar at the American University of Armenia and the Institute of Ethnography and Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. She is working on a second graphic memoir that combines her Aliceheimer's work with her fieldwork on aging and memory in Armenia.

Bunny McBride is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. Holding an MA from Columbia University, she is highly rated as a teacher, and she has served as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College and the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies. Since 1996, she has been an adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. Among her many publications are books such as Women of the Dawn; Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris; Indians in Eden (with Harald Prins); and The Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife, which she coauthored. McBride also has authored numerous book chapters. Honors include a special commendation from the state legislature of Maine for significant contributions to Native women's history. As an activist and researcher for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs (1981-1991), she assisted this Maine Indian community in its successful efforts to reclaim lands, gain tribal status, and revitalize cultural traditions. In recent years, she has served as co-principal investigator for a National Park Service ethnography project and curated several museum exhibits, including "Journeys West: The David & Peggy Rockefeller American Indian Art Collection" for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her latest exhibit, "Indians & Rusticators," received a 2012 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. Currently, she serves as president of the Women's World Summit Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is completing a collection of essays.

Sierra Fox thought her life would be a little easier now that she has paid off the huge debt she owed the Spook Catcher Council when she went freelance. But if anything her life is even more complicated. The relationship she always wanted with Jonathan is falling apart and the man who tempts her, Jason Papan, a PI, is recovering from injuries in her house to keep him safe. If that isn't enough, there is something strange going on with the ghosts - they are disappearing all over the city.

Sierra knows that being a spook catcher is more than just putting ghosts in lock up; she also tries to help the ghosts that she can. Sierra with the help of Jason and her apprentice investigates what going on. As they find out each new answer the truth gets closer and closer a place she knows very well, but just who is behind it and more important why? Personal relationships, friends and family are at risk as Sierra and Jason finally get to the bottom of the disappearances and fight to get rid of the evil that started it all. When the battle is over, will Jason and Sierra have a chance to see where their feelings can go or will Sierra be the next one to disappear?

When ghosts and spook catchers start disappearing, Sierra and Jason put their budding relationship at risk to hunt down the answers in Split at the Seams. I had a feeling that Sierra and Jonathan were done when we last left them and they ended just as Sierra and Jason exploded and finally gave in to the feelings they had been trying to ignore for months now. I wasn't surprised that they teamed up quickly to find out what was happening to the ghosts in Sydney or that they would risk so much to protect the other person. I will admit that I was surprised by the "why" more than the "who" when the final answers came on what was going on. I loved how Sierra's actions when things were looking dim to prove she really is the best spook catcher in Sydney and can defeat evil on both sides of the veil. Split at the Seams has sexy areas, action areas and fun areas while being surrounded in suspense filled plot that will keep you wondering until the final answers are revealed.

I really, really liked this book. It was so incredibly good (I like to use that phrase a lot for books I really like, lol). I would actually give it a 4 1/2 but with Amazon's rating system, I can't do that.

Sierra is turning into one of my favorite protagonist in the uf/pr genre. And I'm loving this world. She has faults but who doesn't. I love her relationship with Papan. Although, I'm confused on how to pronounce his name. Is it simply, Papan (like tapping but without the g) or puh-pan? Either way, I like him and loves how he calls Sierra Foxy Lady and not just because of her last name. Lol

Loving the developing relationship between Sierra and Oren. Sometimes you just have to let the past go and move on.

Still not sure how I feel about Ebony. Didn't love her too much in APOD, and not so sure in SATS. The girl just doesn't know how to listen. And that can get you into trouble.

Now for the other sleazy and skeezy men in Sierra's life, sayonara to one and hopefully the same to the others soon. Just saying.

Anyway, I just bought the third book. Definitely looking forward to On Pins and Needles.

About the Author
Daniel Solis is a contract software engineer who has worked for a number of high-profile clients, including Microsoft Consulting Services, IBM, Lockheed Martin, and PeopleSoft. He has been programming and teaching object-oriented languages and development methods throughout the U.S. and Europe since the early days of C++. It was while teaching numerous seminars on various programming languages that he realized the immense power of diagrams in explaining programming language concepts.

A very well-written C# 4 book., highly recommended

Over the past 10 years, C# has evolved into a rather complex computer language. C# is the de facto language for developing applications for .NET environment. As .NET platform evolves, so does C#. (It is statically type, object oriented based language, and yet supports dynamically type, generic, and some functional programming style.) To learn to use C# properly requires efforts and good text book. Illustrated C# 2010 is one of the few good books for the subject on the market right now. However, the book does not teach basic programming, nor does it teach windows GUI programming. It's strictly for teaching how to write programs in the latest version of C#. The author assumes readers have had some programming experience. Because of the book's format, it's also an excellent C# 4 reference for professional programers. It's in the same category of book as "C# 4 in a NutShell." But illustrated C# 2010 is way much easier to comprehend than the NutShell book due to author's writing stype. Each topic is covered thorougly first by simple, to the point and easy to understand short paragraph with well illustrated figures and diagrams, then a short (less than half a page) of complete C# example is given with output. The book also has a very detail table of content and useful index; it is essential to locate topic quickly.

Illustrated C# 2010, published by Apress, is an introduction to C# for novices and experienced programmers alike. It leads you progressively through the constructs and rules of the language, from the basics of classes and control structures, through intermediate topics such as properties and generics, to the more esoteric constructs such as delegates, events, and concurrent programming. It is bang up to date with C#4, replacing the previous version - Illustrated C# 2008 - which was aligned with C#3.

This is the book that I used to learn C#. I found it useful both as a tutorial guide and - subsequently - as a working reference. It almost always answered my questions. It is well organised enough that you can skip chapters you are not interested in, though an explicit map of chapter dependencies would help. I found only one error, and that in the course of composing this review. The level of formality is just right. The book also benefits from the liberal use of simple clear diagrams. But there are two or three weak chapters: chapter 4 introducing classes, and chapters 15 and 16 on delegates and events respectively.

As I learned to employ automatic properties, lambda expressions, and extension methods, my programming style evolved from what you would write in C++ towards what you would write in Smalltalk. I was also able to change the application I was developing into a concurrent one without pain. My easy progress is a tribute to the clarity of the relevant chapters.

I consider this book more useful to a student of the language than a conventional programming primer. It lacks substantial examples. And it makes no attempt to cover the .NET class library. But it is easy to pick up examples from the internet these days. And the Microsoft documentation of the .NET class library is excellent: more comprehensive and better organised than any textbook could contain. I have ever and anon found referring to a primer annoying: the information is hard to find, diffuse, incomplete, and redundant. Besides, the development environments: Visual C# for Windows or MonoDevelop for more or less everything, have - in the words of Bertrand Russell - the subtlety and suggestiveness which at times make them almost seem like a live teacher.

Excellent book to learn und understand

As a programmer for many, many years and in transition to master C# the idea of the Apress Illustrated book series was a great help for me. It is so easy not just to read endless text, but having the graphic layout as support.
I can say this for Illustrated C# 2008, my first book from this series, and now for the 2010 edition with all the new features in C#, it brings me up to speed again.
Special the well organized style makes it easy to me, to understand areas which I always struggled. Since parts of C# have new terms, with this books it is the first time, that I can explore deeper in areas, which I mostly avoided (Structs, Delegates, Generics, etc) without reading for hours.
I would recommend this book for the entry level as well as a valuable endorsement for experienced programmers, since it is very easy to find a topic and get the meaning in a short time due to the excellent graphic layout.
