Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

One of today’s most admired and controversial political figures, Ayaan Hirsi Ali burst into international headlines following the murder of Theo van Gogh by an Islamist who threatened that she would be next. She made headlines again when she was stripped of her citizenship and resigned from the Dutch Parliament.

Infidel shows the coming of age of this distinguished political superstar and champion of free speech as well as the development of her beliefs, iron will, and extraordinary determination to fight injustice. Raised in a strict Muslim family, Hirsi Ali survived civil war, female mutilation, brutal beatings, adolescence as a devout believer during the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, and life in four troubled, unstable countries ruled largely by despots. She escaped from a forced marriage and sought asylum in the Netherlands, where she earned a college degree in political science, tried to help her tragically depressed sister adjust to the West, and fought for the rights of Muslim women and the reform of Islam as a member of Parliament. Under constant threat, demonized by reactionary Islamists and politicians, disowned by her father, and expelled from family and clan, she refuses to be silenced.

Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali’s story tells how a bright little girl evolves out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no other book could be more timely or more significant.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. Ali is up-front about having lied about her background in order to obtain her citizenship, which led to further controversy in early 2006, when an immigration official sought to deport her and triggered the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh's death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion. 8-page photo insert. From Bookmarks Magazine
Although Ayaan Hirsi Ali remains Public Enemy #1 for radical Muslims, she refuses to be silenced. In this captivating memoir—an act of courage itself—she shares the evolution of her values, beliefs, and identity, all propelled by an urgent mission to educate Western countries about the bigotries of other nations. Set against a terrifying geopolitical landscape of African wars and Muslim fundamentalism, Hirsi Ali addresses timely topics: the plight of refugees and women; the Muslim clan system; forced marriage; political asylum; and, perhaps most significantly, her own personal religious crisis. Written in descriptive, clear prose, Infidel, with its radical feminist criticism of Islam, offers a disturbing view of the modern world—and inspired every critic who read it.

From Booklist
Hirsi Ali, internationally acclaimed for her book The Caged Virgin (2006) and her film depicting the oppression of Muslim women, which cost the life of her colleague Theo van Gogh, now offers a compelling memoir of her life. Stripped of her Dutch citizenship and threatened with the same fate as van Gogh, Hirsi Ali continues to defy conventions regarding Muslim women. She writes poignantly of growing up in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya in a strict Muslim family. She was subjected to female circumcision and brutal beatings by a mother who wanted her to conform to the obedience expected of women. With the rising influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Somalia, her ambitions were even more repressed. She defied a forced marriage and fled to the Netherlands, fighting for the rights of Muslim women and a more open practice of Islam. Her rising political prominence and outspokenness have made her a target of Islamic extremists. Hirsi Ali's spirited recollections and defense of women's rights to independence and self-expression are inspiring to women of all cultures. Vanessa Bush

A vivid chronicle of a triumphant escape from cultural confinement
By Steve Summers
Autobiographies often suffer from late-life authorship--a time when the fires are damped and the events foreshortened by time. This one--by a woman still in her thirties--is an exception to nearly every rule of the genre. Not least for its electrifying readability: it consumed every free moment of the two days it took to finish it. Putting it down was simply not an option.

This book will grab your imagination like no other, transplant you into a world you have probably never known, and introduce you to the intimate world of a muslim family swept by circumstance all over Africa, Arabia, and Europe. The complex interaction of tribes, clans, cultures, extended families and nations (and their consequences) isn't dryly analyzed, it is woven into a personal drama with the momentum of a locomotive. The love of family rides perilously over the jarring railbed of refugee life, of ancient and modern Islamic conflicts, all of it recounted with real compassion in beautifully clear English. This multilingual immigrant needs no ghostwriter.

Unlike the collection of editorial essays which comprised "The Caged Virgin", "Infidel" is a consistently focused narrative of a spectacularly eventful life launched almost inadvertantly into an unparalleled adventure in moral courage. But there's far more here than a clash-of-cultures story well told. There is no targeted rush toward a predestined liberation. The revelatory discovery of western freedoms comes late in the book and gathers like a slow-motion sunrise. Only in the final chapters does she defect from Muslim culture, graduate from the University of Leiden, become a Dutch legislator, a target of Islamic terrorists, and an incendiary revolutionary for Muslim womens' rights.

More than simply discovering western libertarian values, she shows a deep and critical understanding of their history, how they've shaped the modern world, and shows their prognosis for dealing with the festering problem of Europe's Islamic subculture. Her extraordinary life seems more an ongoing work in progress than a settled iconographic career. She has recently moved to America--the adopted home of another famously eloquent and consequential revolutionary: Tom Paine.

Infidel
By Amira Mansour
This is a fantastic description of life in Islam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains in very honestly what she has had to deal with in her life. As an ex muslim myself, she is a brave example for the rest of us women struggling with the threats and violence of Islam. This is a must read book for those who do not have the time or patience to study Islam and Islamic culture. It should be mandatory reading for High School Students in the west. Anyone who has to risk their lives to tell the truth is revolutionary. These days the truth is a revoluntionary act and Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a pioneer and my hero.

A most remarkable book.
By Jeff Peirce
Every now and then, something truly remarkable is written. This book falls into that category. I have read very few books which hit me as hard as this book did.

This is a remarkable woman. She has crossed an impassable divide, and has been able to reach the other side--after considerable suffering, work, and tears. Her journey has not yet ended. I would imagine much more awaits her. She seems to be fated to say what many do not wish to hear.

How well does anyone in the west understand Islam, and all the things it does to people? Do we really understand female genital mutilation, beaten women, arranged marriages, the compuslive need to hide the feminine, and the complete loss of individual freedom? Americans still don't have a clue. This book makes a very real effort to explain a few things. It is painful, but important reading.

One can read the various books on Islam--with great value. This book makes it personal, and painful. It is time the west came to its senses, and faced reality. It is not "one world," all cultures are not equal in value, and the individual matters much more than the collective living in darkness.

On a more mundane level, the book is well-written, gripping, heart wrenching, powerful, painful, touching, and impossible to put down. Read it, and you, too, will feel its remarkable value--and message.

I wish this wonderful woman well . She has done so very much to open our eyes.

Phenomenology and Lacan on Schizophrenia after the Decade of the Brain (Figures of the Unconscious), by Alphonse De Waelhens, Wilfried Ver

In Phenomenology and Lacan on Schizophrenia, Alphonse De Waelhens provides a clear summary of Lacan's theory of schizophrenia, as Lacan derived it from his commentary of Freud's study of the Memoirs of Schreber. De Waelhens also shows how Lacan's understanding of the schizophrenic as having a defective relation to language can also explain four other characteristics of schizophrenic behavior: the fragmented body image; lack of realistic evaluation of the world; so-called bisexuality; and confusion of birth and death. Third, De Waelhens gives a Hegelian interpretation of the pre-Oedipal experience of the child. He makes use of Freud's study on his grand-child using a bobbin and later the words fort-da (away-here), to demonstrate that a transitional object allows the child to take distance from its attachment to the mother so that it can start to separate itself from the mother. Taking distance is, according to De Waelhens, introducing the Hegelian negative, which is the birth of the subject. Fourth, De Waelhens gives a dialectic reading of the history of German and French psychiatry. He shows the epistemological contradictions in the work of some of the great nineteenth century psychiatrists relying too exclusively on a biological model of schizophrenia. In his contribution to this volume, Wilfried Ver Eecke draws several lessons from evaluating the literature on schizophrenia. He argues that epistemologically neither a biological nor a psychological method of reasoning can capture all the factors that can play a role in the creation of schizophrenia. He relies heavily, but not exclusively, on the Finnish studies of Tienari , Myrhman, and Wahlberg and their colleagues to provide statistical evidence that non-biological factors also play an important role in causing schizophrenia. He relies heavily, but again not exclusively, on the study by Karon and VandenBos to demonstrate statistically the efficiency of psychodynamically inspired therapy of schizophrenics.Ver Eecke also addresses an apparent inconsistency in De Waelhens' presentation of Lacan's theory of schizophrenia. Where De Waelhens seemed to argue at one time that the mother figure was the crucial figure to explain schizophrenia (leading to a defective relation to the body) and at another time that it was the role of the father which was crucial (leading to a defective relation to language and the symbolic), there Ver Eecke argues that the defective function of each influences the function of the other. He then draws a conclusion for the therapy of schizophrenics: to be helpful a therapist will have to address both deficiencies. The problem for treating schizophrenics is that correcting an unconscious deficiency to the body-a deficiency in the imaginary-requires a totally different kind of intervention than an attempt to correct a symbolic deficiency-a deficiency in the paternal function. A correction of the imaginary requires a kind of maternal mirroring; a correction of the symbolic requires making a distinction or a prohibition stick. One further difficulty arises. Psychotherapy uses language in its treatment. However, language in schizophrenics is deficient. We can therefore expect that language will be inefficient. This is so unless the therapist uses language, first, to make a repair at the imaginary level and only thereafter makes an attempt to make a correction in the symbolic. In analyzing successful therapeutic techniques reported by several therapists Ver Eecke discovers that all of them first try to repair the imaginary before they attempt to make corrections to the symbolic.

Novel or True Crime?
By A Customer
The best true-crime books ("In Cold Blood," "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil") are models of research, craft, and psychological insight, and do not presume to be anything more. What makes the genre interesting is a teasing ambiguity which, in the hands of a master, can be richer than any novel's--and can deepen our understanding of motivation, memory, misapprehension--the nature of "truth" itself. But first a little modesty is needed.

"Wilkerson was totally honest, and would not tolerate being associated with dishonesty, impropriety, or poor judgment... If he quit the OSBI [the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation] now, at the apex of his career, he would maintain his credibility and reputation, thus being a more viable advocate. He made up his mind at that moment; he was getting out of the business. Some way, somehow, the public had to know the real story."

This trumpet fanfare is from page 226 of "Someone Cry for the Children," and the noble OSBI agent so described, in bluff third-person, is Mike Wilkerson, the book's author. (He co-wrote with his brother Dick, also an OSBI agent). Honest he may be, but that passage instantly made me question what he thinks he knows. What he (and any detective) ought to know is that most murder cases are extremely complex--this one more than most--with too many variables for anyone to claim a monopoly on truth.

We will never know what happened that night in 1977; Gene Leroy Hart, the full-blooded Cherokee fugitive accused (and acquitted) of the crime, could offer no credible account. Neither could some of the witnesses and experts who testified at his trial.

In a case like this--the gruesome sex slayings of three little girls at a Girl Scout camp--emotions naturally run high, and advocates become hardened in their positions. Wilkerson and his brother "know" the truth; so do Hart's supporters, who choose to remember him as a star athlete and handsome role model for Cherokee children in Mayo County. So what we have in "Someone Cry..." is a detailed but highly subjective account of a maddening case--touted as "unsolved...unexplained" in the jacket copy, but which the authors obviously consider closed. As the excerpt suggests, the book's veiled purpose is to lay out as convincingly as possible (in novelistic fashion) the OSBI's case against Hart. This agenda seeps quietly into every page. OSBI agents are described as "confident"; defense attorneys are "smug." Hart's private conversations with his attorneys are quoted and described (without attribution) in such a way as to discredit him. His guilty, "nervous" reactions to questions might, to another observer, have seemed like innocent indignation. Finally, the choice of details (such as a "low, guttural moan" heard on the night of the slayings) ties in very glibly with the authors' pet theory of Gene Hart's guilt.

The book has other flaws. Despite the title--which refers to how politics and other hoopla stole the focus from the victims--the murdered children and their families are virtually ignored here. We learn almost nothing about them. The authors don't even bother to get the oldest girl's name right--was it Denise or Doris Milner? (Toward the end we infer that Denise was her middle name). Amazingly, the authors never even tell us the date of the murders--just that it was "mid-June 1977." (There's a general laziness about dates throughout).

A blurb on the back of the paperback edition makes comparisons with "In Cold Blood." In a pig's eye. This book can't touch that one on any level--language, research, insight, objectivity. The portrait of Hart is about as deep as Injun Joe in "Tom Sawyer." Many of the other figures (mainly those connected with the defense) are shrill caricatures. Most annoying are the novelistic asides about Indian "medicine" and the magical efforts of a pseudonymous medicine man to ensure that divine justice is served. As it happened, Hart died of a heart attack a few months after his acquittal, and the authors (who, like many in the OSBI, have some Cherokee blood) imply that the Great Spirit snuffed him out for his crime.

And yet--despite the bias and sloppiness and corn--the Wilkersons succeed in building a case. The wealth of evidence against Hart is impossible to dismiss. To do so is to accept an O.J. scenario of planted evidence and pervasive corruption/racism in the OSBI. So why did the jury free him? Easy: they didn't. Hart was already facing 305 years on unrelated charges (kidnapping, rape, burglary). Setting him loose on society was never a possibility. Why send him to Death Row, then, and have to face the anger of his legions of rabid supporters? Jurors--humans--almost always take the easy route, then convince themselves it was right.

This book is above average for the genre; the writing is hardly inspired, but the Wilkersons know their subject thoroughly. (The careless omissions here and there may be the result of knowing it too well). The story is involving without ever descending to sensationalism. Still, the book does not haunt me the way it might have--had a real writer explored the case from its many, fascinating, hideous angles. This narrow little account left me with nothing but the belief that Hart was probably guilty. Very little light was cast into the blackness of his incomprehensible crime.

BASED ON THE INCREDIBLE GRADUATION SPEECH WITH OVER 10 MILLION VIEWS ON YOUTUBE

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

Make your bed
By John J. Niles
I saw the author on Fox news, and was intrigued. I am certainly not SEAL tough, never was, but anyone can incorporate this into his life. If you are slightly better today than yesterday, and slightly better tomorrow than today, your life will be more meaningful and impactful. I will be purchasing additional copies as gifts.

Straight talk from a former Navy SEAL
By Kindle Customer
There are many "self-help" books on the market that contain solid information. However, General McRaven's Make Your Bed comes across as refreshingly different from those books by well known self-help gurus like Dr. Phil or Tony Robbins mainly because the anecdotes he uses to illustrate his ten key points are gleaned from his experiences as a Navy SEAL. I read this little book in one sitting and plan to buy copies for my children. In a nutshell, McRaven says that life is tough, but meeting challenges with discipline, determination, a positive attitude and the support of others will most often lead an individual to a meaningful life that will inspire others.

Every word here is a gift
By Terrence Walsh
Ten little ideas that make life work?
Been there. Done that. Roger, all ten of 'em.
You can probably read this book in less than an hour but it will make you think for days. Maybe even years.

My favorite? # 10: Never, Ever Quit!
A while back I retired from a military service. Then I volunteered to be recalled to active duty to do a job that absolutely nobody else was willing to do. And with good reason--that job had every kind of endless emotional misery and conflict you could imagine. Because I had already retired I had a retirement plaque hanging on my office wall. Many days things were so soul-suckingly rotten that I looked at that plaque. I imagined dropping that plaque on my boss's desk and quitting. And then, every time, I asked my self why I had the desk with the job that nobody else was willing to do. I answered that question to my own satisfaction and did what needed doing next. The plaque stayed on that wall for five years until I was transferred to another job that absolutely nobody else was willing to do.
Good thing I had all that practice. My next "worst job in the Service" lasted nine years. Altogether I had fourteen bonus years of active duty, helping fellow servicemembers and their dependents transition through the toughest times of their lives--disabilities, and death. In the end I had it easy. Darn glad I never quit.

In my experience, every word in this book is a gift. I hope you, too, find that to be true.
