I agree completely with the other reviewers; this is a best-in-class book that will become a "classic" over time. While it is at the top of its game for its knowledge and insight, it also is an easy, laid back read. For at least five years, I've been hearing about Go To Market Strategies but no one has defined what it means yet, or tried to. When you see the cover of this book, you think "Of course. It is about time someone wrote this book". Once you go inside the covers, you will be pleased. The best endorsement I can give is that I am buying a copy for each of my 41 direct reports. Author Larry Friedman offers a clear and practical framework for going to market, which involves choosing the right markets, channels, products, customers, and value propositions to increase growth and profits. This approach is supported by scores of examples. The examples are of real companies with real problems, not the usual "In Search Of Excellence" best practice stories that are happy-face fairy tales for the most part. The whole book was well informed from cover to cover. The most important chapters were the Ten Commandments Of Going To Market, and Targeting The Right Markets, which is the soundest and best description of market evaluation and selection techniques anyplace. That chapter must be why the book got such a strong endorsement from Kotler, the Marketing Guru. If there is a weakness in this book, it is the chapter on products. While the discussion of product development as part of a market strategy overhaul is OK, the author's strength is in marketing and channels, not product development. On the other hand, he does have a few provocative things to say about product design. The author's reputation preceeding this book is as a channel strategist, and for the large parts of the book that concerns sales and marketing channels, he does not disappoint. It is brutally evident here that he knows more about channels and partner distribution than anyone else today, period. Go To Market Strategy is an Internet Mania Free Zone, with a sane and balanced view point on the role of the Internet in an overall marketing strategy. You will enjoy his description of the Pets.com debacle. I almost fell out of my chair laughing at his irreverent(and dead-accurate) analysis of why Pets.com failed. He also has an irreverent and cynical view point about marketing consultants, a group he acknowledges belonging to. You get the impression that the author has a sense of humor about the whole thing. That is very refreshing and reason in itself to buy this book. Also, make sure you read every footnote. They're like the bonus materials on a DVD movie. A few are standard references, but many have extra information and insight, and they are kind of a running commentary on the main body of the text.

Excellent book on marketing strategy - a must read!!!

I just purchased a copy of this book, and read it cover to cover in one sitting (although it is about 300 pages). This appears to be the "follow up" book to author Lawrence Friedman's last book The Channel Advantage (a copy of which is dog-eared and worn to the binding in my personal library). This book has some similarities to The Channel Advantages, but some big differences too. Like The Channel Advantage, it is witty and interesting with a sense of humor lacking in most business books, I really enjoy this author's books. Also, it shows a street wise, very practical understanding of the sales and marketing issues faced by both large and small companies. It has dozens of case studies and interesting (and clever) examples of companies in many different markets. Where Go To Market Strategy differs from the author's last book is the content. Go To Market Strategy is a much more strategic and all-inclusive book -something like, every sales and marketing issue you face in taking your products to customers. At first you think, the author bites off so much content, can he (and you) chew it, but it is all digestible and a few hundred pages later, you "get it". The book's theme or argument is twofold. First, to "go to market" with a product or service successfully, you must execute five very interrelated activities: selection of the right market(s), identification of customers' core needs, the right channels mix, the best product design, and development of a strong (compelling) sales message. Second, everything you do in going to market must be organized around the needs and desires of customers. While not exactly a new idea, the author does a very nice job of providing helpful tools and practical ideas to get aligned with customers and meet them on their own terms. In fact, this book is one of the few to say something useful and new, and non-cliche'd, about focusing on the customer and the role that customers must play in your go to market efforts.
For ...Minimally, it will give you a plethora of tools, concepts and ways to think about increasing sales at a lower cost. But you may get a lot more than that out of the book - a total systematic approach to use when launching new products and sales campaigns.

Great marketing book

This is a great marketing book. No hype and no b.s., just a lot of sound, practical ideas for connecting better with your customers and doing more business with them. The theoretical ideas are very well supported by practical advice and what must be 25 or 30 useful cases examples from Corporate America (and Europe - some Asian examples would have been nice too). I thought the chapters on choosing markets and aligning with customers were especially well written and useful. I also thought the part on value propositions was eye opening and likely to lead more than a few executives to rethink whether they really have a winning message. For a marketing book, you always have to wonder whether it's serious or if it's just a bunch of stupid McKinsey 2x2 matrices. This book is one of the rare ones that trades in all those tired "cash cow" pedantics for practical, sales-oriented advice. So I give this book a solid 5 stars because I don't know what more you could want from a marketing book. Finally, the two chapters on channels are detailed, complete, well written, and full of important post dot-bomb ideas for building a new channel strategy. These two chapters alone would be well worth the cost of the book.

Excellent Method!

I'm a pianist at the intermediate level, but my sightreading skills are well below par. This book arrived today, I completed the first three exercises and used Harris's method on an arrangment of a Haydn piece from the Haydn-Shaum book (Book I). Much to my delight, I was able to play through the piece correctly and musically despite never having played it before. Harris has you clap the rhythm, make a note of key and time signatures, as well as scan the piece to make a note of finger changes - these are based on finger changes made while playing scales. This kind of prep prior to playing a piece ensures that one sight reads fluently and well.
The exercises are musical and incorporate rhythms and finger changes (dotted quarter notes followed by eighth notes etc.) that one would encounter in any piece of music. The rhythm moves from treble to bass clef so both hands are given equal importance.
I strongly recommend Harris's books (they are graded, so start at whatever level you're comfortable sight-reading) to anyone who wishes to improve their sight-reading skills, and wants to play a piece musically and fluently from a score at first sight!

Certainly does help with sight reading. I have the earlier volume and working up the books you can see an improvement in how fast you can sight read

To the above post, I would reply that to leave the reader asking questions is not a shortcoming at all. Rather, continually questioning and revising conclusions is what historical study is all about. The first mark of a good historian is the ability to ask the right questions--and this task is not nearly as easy as it may seem, as evidenced by the plethora of bad histories out there. And that a historian succeeds in prompting and inspiring the reader to ask his or her own questions after putting down the book can only be considered an exceptional quality. I would seriously question any historian who claimed to have all the complete answers to all of his or her questions.

The History of The Bomb

A World Destroyed is a very good accounting of the United States's building of the first atomic bombs, with a great emphasis on the diplomatic and political players, rather than the scientists. The author has updated the book to include the latest possible historical information from recently (book was printed in 1977) declassified material. Sherwin's major shortcoming is his ability to leave the reader asking even more questions than he started with. However, it is still worth reading for those who want to know more about such a revolutionary invention than you learn in high school.

Like BCO/MCO/NCO but for class D-A

This book and the first volume (Basic Chess Openings) (...) are an excellent opening book for players between class D and class A. They cover the basic ideas of the openings. In particular they look at all the alternatives that your normal opening book assumes you already know how to refute.

So for example: 1 e4,e5, 2Nf3 Nc6, 3 Bc4. This is a line that everyone knows (the italian) and everyone knows the "correct response" is Bc5. But why?

Kallia first goes through the very natural Nf6 and how the two knights defense makes life very tough for black. He covers in detail the major lines of the two knights
a) Violent central attack (4 d4)
b) Attack on the f7-pawn (4 g5)
and their sub-variations

Having shown why 3 ..Nf6 isn't so good he then looks at 3..Nd4 (and shows how it is refuted by 4Nxd4 (while telling white to avoid the trap of 4Nxe5). Then he looks 3..Be7 and how this ends up too passive. Thus 3..Bc5 seems to be the only move left. From here the 3 main lines of the Italian are discussed, etc... Detailed thorough discussion of the basics for people who are capable of understanding opening theory but just don't know it yet. This book lays the groundwork for you to read an MCO level book. I strongly recommend it for the player with a USCF rating over 1000 and under 2000.

A solid book covering a variety of openings

Much like 'Basic Chess Openings' by the same author, this book covers many of the more common 1 d4 and other openings. Queens Gambit, Kings Indian, and a couple of others are covered in-depth with many of the variations discussed. Unlike some books, Grandmaster Kallai really tries to describe what you are trying to achieve with each opening/variation. For basic/intermediate level of play, I really recommend this book. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because some openings are simply glanced at - almost as if it was a rush finish.

Constance Brown, CMT, is the founder of Aerodynamic Investments Inc. (www.aeroinvest.com). Connie trades for an institutional bank and offers research and analysis to financial institutions worldwide. She also trains other advanced professionals and hedge fund managers. The Market Technicians Association in New York has members in seventy countries. The organization selected her book Technical Analysis for the Trading Professional, Second Edition as required study for the final certification examination for the CMT (Chartered Market Technician). Make Some Sense

Its Been 4 Years Since the basic book has been released...Author should make some sense for delaying the 2nd book for so long,Those who bought the 1st book are fools? With basic principles one cant read charts,its not possible,mkt can go into deeper corrections most of the time....
It wont be in bull or bear phase for quite long.....In the 1st book itself she forgot to mention that there il be extending waves in wave 1 or wave 5 at times.....There is no scope for that in her book on how to tackle that.......Box strategies are useful when only wave 3 is extended.(if it does).
She mentioned with three bars you can say that impulse has been developed,its wrong.......I can show numerous examples where it doesnt...
3 Bars can be either be impulse or diagonal......Some times u can see after significant bull rally,there will be a top where 3 bars have been pointed towards downside,it doesnt mean its start of the correction or next major impulse....If its an expanded flat? Then u r gone n out....Sometimes u can see the 3bars which are pointing downwards,which u think is start of an impulse can contain 3 waves in each segment ,it can be visible only on lower time frame..If mkt moves back to original trend after tht 3 bars which she thinks are impulse in nature.....It only means thats its part of an irregular correction and 3 bars itself can be impulse in nature or ending diagonal....If u c on same time frame,u can c it as impulse,but it can be ending diagonal which rarely occurs in wave c position...(If its part of expanded flat correction)
Diagonals usually faces in direction of trend,which she forgot to mention,coz its very helpful for novice in finding it out.....that differentiates between triangles and diagonals......
I dont know what author is thinking by delaying the 2nd book for so long.........I dont know how cmt professionals chose her book in cmt course.
Dont u think she is wasting our time by delaying the 2nd book?.......It takes years of practice to master elliot waves and she is fuel in heat.

Very helpful tips of applying EWP instead of just talking about theory. However the book requires some basic understanding of EWP or other technical analysis skills in order to follow up the content well.

Very entertaining Roman thriller

The second in this new Roman series sits within a pretty crowded market and some very well-known authors. I enjoyed the first book and this follow up is just as good.

Young and slightly naive Cassius Corbulo is an Imperial agent, not by choice, more by circumstance. He is smart but no great sword fighter and in many situations lacks confidence or gravitas which does make a refreshing change. In this book he continues to be aided by his servant Sumo (and again the author avoids the trap of them treating each-other as equals) and a taciturn ex Gladiator who is along as a bodyguard. The three of them are on the trail of some stolen treasure and an Imperial Banner that must be recovered.

So we share the adventures of our trio as they doggedly follow the trail of theft, murder and treachery.

It works on a number of levels as the characters have depth and, especially in the case of Cassius, have their flaws that they manage through. In addition the dynamics between the main three characters is always entertaining and this helpd make this a fun and entertaining romp.

Not what I expected, but a great read!

They say not to judge a book by its cover. This is not a sword and glory novel, it is more along the lines of espionage or mystery and it really works well. In this second of the series we see the main protagonist Cassius fleshed out and while not exactly James Bond of the Legionary set, it still had me engrossed throughout. Brown also introduces another character, the bodyguard former gladiator who works well in the tale. The ancient city of Antioch is brought to life and could almost be considered a main character too as it is richly woven into the second half of the book. Overall an enjoyable, comfortable way to spend some hours being transported back in time... Can't wait to dive into the next in the series, The Far Shore, as soon as I click Send!

A new Roman series that's thoroughly entertaining

This exciting new series stands-out within a highly competitive, crowded genre alongside authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden to name but a few. Unlike the merciless warrior `hero' figure of Cassius in the majority of fiction, here the author portrays this icon in a new light and altogether different angle. The slant taken on the Roman fighter is one of secret service as a spy; an entirely original concept that's unexpected and intriguing. This detective type story takes you on a thrilling adventure with epic battles and treasure hunts, reminiscent of "The Eagle" versus a contemporary crime saga! Full of twists & turns in the plot, shocking secrets and unforeseen unfolding events...I can predict this series becoming something of a sensation.

It's ultimately the characters that make this gripping tale so fascinating to read and colourful - from Cassius' servant Simo, his bodyguard Indavara and the ex-gladiator. This tantalizing trio on the trail for the Imperial banner were full of depth, and I loved their interaction amongst themselves throughout the book. Murder and treachery within an authentic, atmospheric setting makes this historical novel a winner in my mind and a sure-fire success as a sequel! Although this is part of a series it is also a book that likewise can be read as a `stand alone' novel.

Book 2 in the Agent of Rome series is a spectacular story and one that I would highly recommend to fans of this genre, as something new and highly imaginative. Rich backdrops and likeable characters make this unusual tale something truly unforgettable. I am so pleased to have won a copy of Nick Brown's book {through a GoodReads, first-read giveaway} and I look forward to reading and discovering more of his work.

Great book for a trip with kids!

Adults want to see the typical sights found in guidebooks, many of which bore a kid to tears and thereby make a family vacation as pleasant as dental work. The sights in this book are entirely different, and adding a sprinkling of the attractions found in "Montana Curiosities" to a trip could make the difference between boring and bearable for children or teens.

What would a kid rather visit, statuary in the State Capitol or working player pianos in Nevada City's Music Hall? A picturesque waterfall or Barstool Races? You get the picture.

If you're visiting Montana with youngsters (or maybe even without), do yourself a favor and bring along this book. Even if you visit only one or two of the Curiosities, the kids will enjoy Ednor Theirrault's entertaining descriptions of the available oddities. And a good time will be had by all.

Mom and Dad moved out to MT from NoDak in 1965 - I was 7 at the time. First vivid scary memory was hearing about the Flathead Monster. Left for college in '76 and only back periodically since then, but...man, I've read about 50 pages of this book and am laughing at least once a minute! Mr. Therriault is a terrific writer, a true journalist even, with a keen eye for originality, beauty, and just plain fun. Much of the stuff in here is places I've been - I just never noticed this stuff. Am about to order ten copies just so I can hand them out to some of my DC friends who are forever saying "I'd love to visit Montana." Maybe this will pique their interest. The Treasure State is indeed that, but its greatest gold and silver are the people who live there. Great job Ednor for what I'm sure is going to be more hilarity as I finish the book.

BTW, your photo captions are BRILLIANT!

Really a fun book to keep in the car when you travel. Have found a number of the Curiosities we never would have seen otherwise.
