Big Failure Fans

We've read all five! And it is required "read aloud" reading at my house because otherwise, every 30 seconds I'd hear "Mom, listen to this!" Plus, I think I enjoy the series as much as he does (11 yo son). So, my only complaint is that it ended far too soon. My son laughed out loud with tears streaming down his face unable to catch his breath on multiple occasions. It just doesn't get any better than that. The humor is spot-on: delightfully irreverent and stealthily sweet. Please hurry up with the sequels!! :-)

So hilarious!! My 8 year old loves it!!!!!!!

I bought this to read to my 8 year old son. Oh my it is so funny! We both laugh out loud at the funny parts all the time. I don't ever remember reading a book so funny. He loves it. It is nice to find an enjoyable book to read to him at night. Makes reading every night more fun. He has a hard time with reading and school so this makes it more enjoyable. I am going to look for more by this author. This was a great find!

these are some funny books, for kids, and adults with a sense of humor

Im not a kid, and I still loved these books. I got them for my grandson(9 yrs old) so he could do something other than play games on his Kindle. He liked them so much he has been reading them out loud to me. When I bought them I had them delivered to my Kindle by mistake, and they looked interesting so I gave it a little read. I enjoyed them so much I read them all.
Stephan Pastis writes an easy to read story, with some twists and turns, but not so much my grandson cant follow it. Timmy does silly stuff and draws enough wrong conclusions we both were yelling--TIMMY--you've got it all wrong! I cant say enough good things about these books. I recommend them for adults and for kids.

Edward Gleed was born in Shropshire and spent most of his childhood with a grandstand view of the Cardiff-Crewe main line from his garden. Working presently as a signalman, he spends both his working and leisure time in some way connected with railways. He has received a long service award for his service in the Operations Department of the Railway industry, and is a member of a local model railway club and a keen railway photographer.

The reference in evolutionary multi-objective optimization

Evolutionary multi-objective optimization is becoming more and more used these days, and most breakthroughs in this subject can be found in these proceedings (proceedings of EMO'03 are even better than EMO'01, the program committee did a wonderful job). These are not the standard technical proceedings whose intended audience are specialists in the field, anyone with a basic knowledge of evolutionary computation can understand these papers. The proceedings begin with short tutorials explaining what EMO is and after that about the first half deals with more theoretical aspects while the second part with applications.
Reading these proceedings like a book is feasible (you may skip some papers you're not interested in) and most of the papers are very well written, so if you're interested in recent advances in EMO, reading these proceedings is almost required. The book by Kalyanmoy Deb (Multi-objective optimization using evolutionary algorithms) is nice but does not provide enough treatment from an applications perspective, but it constitutes a nice textbook to enter the subject of EMO anyway.
Both EMO2001 and 2003 proceedings are "must-read" in evolutionary multi-objective optimization !

This book comprehensively addresses theories, techniques, and examples of permutation design in order to fully demonstrate to the reader the full range of possibilities this method represents. The significance of such an approach to design is enormous, paradigmatic, and far-reaching. It provides an alternative method for design analysis, synthesis, and evaluation that is based on computational force rather than pure human intelligence alone. In contrast to human-based random sampling or intuition, permutation-based design offers the assurance of an optimum design since any possible alternative design can be eliminated. From a practical point of view, this methodology offers a paradigmatic shift away from the current state of design practice where arbitrariness, repetition, and redundancy often exist. From a theoretical viewpoint, this new paradigm will offer alternative insights into the value of human creativity, intuition, and intelligence.

About the Author

Kostas Terzidis was an Associate Professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2003 until 2012. He taught courses in Algorithmic Architecture, Kinetic Architecture, Digital Media, and Design Research Methods. He holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Michigan (1994), an M.Arch from OS (1989), and a Diploma of Engineering from the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece (1986). He is now the CEO and co-founder of Organic Parking, a company developing smart city parking space optimization using mobile social networks.

About the Author
William J. Palm III�a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics�at the�University of Rhode Island, he helped develop an educational program of introduction to engineering based on MATLAB.�He is the author of several books, including the System dynamics, published by McGraw-Hill and Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Dynamic Systems and Mechanical Vibration, both published by�John Wiley.

Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.

Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French.

Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Unimpressed.

This book was just about useless to me. Quite frequently, the answers to the problems within chapters are incorrect. Some of the figures are also incorrect. There are many spelling and grammatical errors, and seemed all around unintelligent. It does not explain the material well, and what it does explain is not enough to do the problems in the book. Normally, I rely on my textbooks to understand material that I didn't grasp during lecture, but this book didn't help a bit. My professor has actually apologized for requiring us to buy this book.

It says there is less math "jargon" and there is... it explains topics in plain English. The only problem is math is not plain English and sometimes needs to be explained in depth. I found that I cannot do many of the problems at the end of the chapter based on the information given in the text. I've had to seek further help with Shaum's Outlines which explains the topics 10X better. Since this is a first edition book, there is also little help online for the problems given and no solutions manual to help get you through.

Differential equations to me is very abstract, and there are not enough simplified, well explained examples. This book definitely assumes you have a complete, profound knowledge of Calculus I & II. In a nutshell, I feel like this is a condensed, abbreviated text. Oh, and the one thing that bugs me the most, no solutions to problems in the back. Get friendly with Wolfram Alpha.

Devious Sudoku challenger

I am looking for challenging sudoku puzzles even perhaps using some advanced techniques. Most of there puzzles are as devious as possible without using any advanced techniques, such as xwing, simple coloring, etc. They all use a similar style with hidden singles, hidden naked pairs, and a lot of naked triples that gradually reduce the possibilities, resulting in a difficult ongoing process until the puzzles are almost solved. I've reached the last 2 dozen and they have even become more difficult, one requiring an xwing so far.

Very Strong but not Too Strong!

If you, like me, find newspaper puzzles boringly simple, the Will Shortz books are nicely done and fairly consistently rated. His collections run from mixed collections to medium to hard, to very hard. If you are a master of this stuff, there are more difficult Sudoku books available but Shortz works for me. This collection consists of what he calls "Beware, very Challenging" and Mind-melting". So they are harder than many of his hard collections. I find them just right, puzzling but generally solvable. I also like the fact that they are in a good size format and printed on quality paper, so that the an HB pencil mark shows up.

"In the Spring of my 16th year, I received a letter." Slight spoiler bc this shoujo is diff and needs to be read by all.

If you could save someone dear to you from taking their own life, would you?

This series was just adapted into a film, for which I will leave the trailer to below. The story focuses on Naho, a reserved but relate-able young girl who has received a letter from her future self. The letters she frequently receives details events that will come true and when they start proving themselves to Naho, she realizes this is for real.

A boy named Kakeru transfers into her class. And this is where the depressing, heart-aching, and very thoughtfully done story begins. To slightly set the tone, the story is about preventing Kakeru's suicide. And Naho has to somehow help him. I can't delve much more into this other than to say that this is a very realistic tale and will make you cry. I've lost a few of my closest friends to suicide, so this definitely struck a cord with me. I've always wanted to go back in time to stop them.

Naho has that chance. How she will, or will she be able to, is the ultimate question.

I'm sure all of us can recall falling for our friend, wanting time to stop and to be there for them. All of us can remember the best friends we all had and fondly look back on them. But when one is suffering so badly and is about to kill them-self, what can you do? This is Orange.

How does this omnibus hold up? If you have any of the 3-in-1's like Naruto, Skip Beat! etc, then be relieved. Seven Seas didn't use cheap paper. The collection is sturdy and hefty, but not so much that it will hurt your hands when reading. 4 colored pages are the what you will open this to, and it is absolutely gorgeous. The pages aren't see through and are practically the same quality of any regular manga page.

The art is clean and shojo sparkles are kept to a bare minimum. The romance is slow building and done very well, and all the characters are someone you will care for. This bind up contains the first 3 volumes and doesn't disappoint. Even someone who isn't a fan of shoujo can appreciate this due to how it handles the subject matter. It's relate-able and touching.

happy nostalgia of youth with the melancholy bitterness of loss

Orange mixes the hopeful , happy nostalgia of youth with the melancholy bitterness of loss, regrets and the dark topic of suicide.
Although as an american I cannot relate to the way the Japanese treat the subject of suicide generally, this book was unexpectedly
different , in that, the suicide was not treated as an honorable thing to do but rather showed how suicide can lead to
so much confusion and pain for those who are left behind in the wake of the person's death.
The thing that kept me reading the book was the charm of youth and the fun of the time travel element as the story unwinds there are a few twists and unexpected developments so you will want to get the second one as well.
Good read,
some really Lovely artwork depicting actual real places in Japan!

I love this series and I can't wait for the 2nd part of the collection to come out. If you're a fan of romance, teenage life, and good story telling then give this manga a shot!
