About the Author
William J. Palm III�a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics�at the�University of Rhode Island, he helped develop an educational program of introduction to engineering based on MATLAB.�He is the author of several books, including the System dynamics, published by McGraw-Hill and Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Dynamic Systems and Mechanical Vibration, both published by�John Wiley.
Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.
Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French.
Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Unimpressed.

This book was just about useless to me. Quite frequently, the answers to the problems within chapters are incorrect. Some of the figures are also incorrect. There are many spelling and grammatical errors, and seemed all around unintelligent. It does not explain the material well, and what it does explain is not enough to do the problems in the book. Normally, I rely on my textbooks to understand material that I didn't grasp during lecture, but this book didn't help a bit. My professor has actually apologized for requiring us to buy this book.

It says there is less math "jargon" and there is... it explains topics in plain English. The only problem is math is not plain English and sometimes needs to be explained in depth. I found that I cannot do many of the problems at the end of the chapter based on the information given in the text. I've had to seek further help with Shaum's Outlines which explains the topics 10X better. Since this is a first edition book, there is also little help online for the problems given and no solutions manual to help get you through.

Not Enthusiastic

Differential equations to me is very abstract, and there are not enough simplified, well explained examples. This book definitely assumes you have a complete, profound knowledge of Calculus I & II. In a nutshell, I feel like this is a condensed, abbreviated text. Oh, and the one thing that bugs me the most, no solutions to problems in the back. Get friendly with Wolfram Alpha.
