About the Author
Barbara A. Anderson, DrPH, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, is the Director of the post-master's Doctor of Nursing Practice program (DNP) at Frontier Nursing University, Hyden, Kentucky. She is co-editor of "Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Research, " and Practice (2008 & 2012) and was awarded the American College of Nurse Midwives Book of the Year Award for "Reproductive Health: Women and Men's Shared Responsibility" (2005). Dr. Anderson has served on the editorial board of the "Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health" and currently serves as a journal referee for "Medical Anthropology Quarterly" and "Social Science and Medicine". She has served as chair of the Population, Reproductive and Sexual Health section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Anderson led an urban initiative in California that won "The Safe Motherhood Initiative-USA Model Program" award. As a program consultant in Africa, Asia and Latin America, she has prepared nurses, midwives and physicians in public health and the midwifery model of care.

Not a good choice...

This was required for a course and, like so many other courses at the Master's level, we never used it. My one piece of advice- unless you have an assignment due the first day of class, do not purchase the texts on the list until you have spoken to the instructor. It would have saved me a lot of money- not just with this one text.
I did read the textbook and it was terrible. It was poorly written and had no information that was helpful to me in my Nursing program.

Sometimes you don’t want a big tome on screenwriting, you want something you can take in straight away and apply the thinking you find there – especially if it’s for a short film script!

The biggest take-out for me was the emphasis on what author Nic Penrake calls a ‘resonant’ idea, and he illustrates well this notion that even a short film has the capacity to work a sort of ripple effect if the script is grown from a compelling idea. There’s some great stuff too on how to craft that idea in short form once you’ve got it, how to keep honing it until you have a really awesome piece. It’s already sharpened my thinking anyway. Totally recommended.

Misleading title and cover pic

I'm not familiar with Mitch Byrd's other works but the cover of Big Girl Adventures is not indicative of the contents of the majority of the book. The art & the characters of the first story, Bloodtown, were excellent and about what I expected to see. The second story, Wingworld, was not. There were only a handful of big girl secondary characters in Wingworld. Sadly, Wingworld consumed about 75% of the book!

For those who know Mitch's work and love his buxom babes, Big Girl Adventures is pretty good. However, I liked his older books more. Some of the humor of his other books is lacking in this work. Still, his artwork is great.

If you liked Packt's other thin QlikView books…

Packt has published most of the QlikView books out there, starting with the de facto "QlikView bible" by Garcia and Harmsen, and following up with (a) the substantial books by Stephen Redmond and (b) the thin, richly priced books by Karl Pover [ok], Tim Floyd [bad], Diane Blackwood [bad] and Christopher Ilaqua [bad].

"Creating Stunning Dashboards With QlikView" joins the (b) camp, and brings its average up. The book has an appealing informal, enthusiastic style, and talks about (i) dashboard design in general (think Tufte ultra-lite), (ii) QlikView's visual elements, and (ii) concrete QlikView tips. It is open-and-shut too sketchy for my taste - I would have gone for Garcia and Harmsen or Redmond; let me call the three authors "GHR" - but here is a more general reservation. By choosing not to discuss data, only the front-end, CSDQV rules itself out as one's "starter" QlikView book: it has to be the second at least. It is too junior for people who had read GHR, or the Wiley-published "QlikView Your Business". Who is left then - people who had gone for the other (b) titles? A suboptimal route if you ask me, but if you must try it, choose Karl Pover's book as its first leg.

if the document doesn't look nice people will not want to use it

This is an area of QlikView development that is often sadly overlooked. As a QlikView "gun for hire" I often pick up applications created by other developers and find even the most fundamental design errors made time and time again. It is this lack of attention to detail that can often sour peoples experience of QlikView. Simply put, if the document doesn't look nice people will not want to use it, and if they don't use it then it adds very little value.

This book focuses on the little details that can lift an application from being average (or worse) to being an application that makes the information jump off the screen. It promotes many of the same principles that I always preach, such as every detail matters and simplicity is king.

The book doesn't try to teach you how to use QlikView or give a holistic approach to dashboard design, there are other titles for these things, but it does focus of every individual detail of what you need to get right on each screen.

One of the worst colloquial courses

While the Colloquial course enjoy a good reputation for its courses in European languages, its three Arabic courses have been a disgrace for some twenty years already - something even those responsible at Routledge (the publisher) have admitted in private.

The main problem with this course is exactly the same as in the older Colloquial Arabic courses, far too little content. Compared to most other courses, this book is very thin despite Arabic being notoriously difficult. This leads to two consequences:

a. the grammar descriptions are too short and more bewildering than helpful. Colloquial courses for almost all European languages include a complete overview of the main grammatical points (of course not always in great detail, but still). For a beginner coming to Arabic, this course is likely to scare him/her off, as it doesn't help one bit in understanding grammar but still includes just enough to make it seem hard.

b. the vocabulary is a joke. For most other Colloquial courses, the vocabulary you learn in the course is somewhere around 1400-1600 words. Many courses include over 2000 words (Colloquial Italian, Icelandic, Albanian, Czech, Russian, Spanish of Latin America and probably others as well). This course, in sharp contrast, doesn't even include 600 words, and that's far too little for a course calling itself a "complete" language course.

So only one third of the vocabulary found in other Colloquial courses and hardly any help at all with the grammar. Despite having three Arabic courses on the market, Routledge still hasn't tried to produce a course that would fulfill the promises given by its other courses and by the "complete course"-label.

This is a pretty limited course in a lot of different respects. It doesn't treat grammar as thoroughly as it should and the amount of vocabulary it offers won't get a learner past the very beginning level. There is a little bit of material on the Arabic alphabet, but the very short dialogues are all written in a confusing system of transliteration, even though probably the majority of English-speaking students of spoken Arabic have already studied Standard Arabic for a while and of course know the alphabet. So there isn't really a whole lot here, although if you buy the accompanying CDs they will give you a good idea of how to pronounce words. Check out the American University in Cairo Press for some much more comprehensive courses (although be forewarned that the 'Kallimni 'Arabi' series by Samia Louis is almost entirely written in Arabic and would be very hard to do without a teacher.

The colloquial series in general is FANTASTIC. However, the arabic series (for all dialects) are too short, miss the mark on the standard of excellence I expect from the series, and needs a huge overall. It will work fine for you if you want to get enough language to travel but not for the even semi-serious language learner.

comprehensive review

A 500 page review of the 3000 page standard textbook in SurgPath - is that possible?

The basic structure of the review is based on the 31 chapters in Rosai's two-volume textbook. This includes the pastel-colored chapter coding and the sub structuring of each chapter (eg. neuromuscular system with CNS, peripheral nerves, skeletal muscle). In contrast to the other available multiple-choice reviews on Anatomic Pathology (~1800 questions: Lefkowitch 1st ed. 2006; ~600 questions: Sternberg's by DiPatre 1st ed. 2005), the format here is mainly based on true/false statements. This "new" design of ~4000 questions provides an interesting transition between the "standard" MC questions and the "rapid-fire question-answer facts" provided in the Pathology Board Review by Roberts (3rd ed. 2006; over 4000 question-answer combinations). The main difference to the aforementioned review is, that the pages containing the questions are separated from the answers. While this layout prevents "cheating", the format of the answers does not allow independent reading of only the answers (eg. some refer to the phrasing in the question). Therefore, the page in the main textbook is provided - which is really helpful.

Why not five stars?

Well, in those chapters with many subchapters [eg. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) or Female reproductive system], the separation of question and answers does not allow quick and easy look-up. Example: a question #8 in the GIT sub-chapter "Small bowel" requires exact tracking in the answer section to this chapter, as there are answers #8 in the subchapter esophagus, stomach, small bowel, appendix, colon and anus. This is more of a layout problem but can be annoying as reading the answer of a different question distracts quite a bit. Small organ symbols/icons behind the answer could have solved this issue...

It still rocks!

The main strength of this review is the comprehensive recapitulation of the enormous two-volume set. When reviewing a chapter in Rosai, the outline is mainly anatomic and the style is unique and entertaining; which can be confusing (probably the reason why some like Sternberg better...). However, if you like "Rosai," and plan to read it from cover to cover, but are overwhelmed by the 10kg of surgical pathology, BUY this review. It provides you with some sort of attending guided marker. There are not many pictures, but the book highlights on average 2 facts per page in the "big" Rosai - and if reviewed together (on a large and stable desk), chapters fly by - almost (50 true/false statements ~2.5 hours).

Final remark

This is truly a SURGICAL pathology review book and does therefore not include separate chapters of the "other" topics integrated in the Anatomic Pathology part of the Boards (eg. Immuno, Molecular-, Cyto-, Forensic- or Infectious Disease Pathology). But that should be clear, as it is based on a Surgical Pathology Text.

The review by Damjanov and Nola provides an inexpensive and interesting "exoskeleton" to Rosai's; it is truly comprehensive and highlights 2 essentials per page. To answer my initial question - it is possible... Good job.

Not perfect but not bad

The format of the questions is T and F ..which is not very helpful for the MCQ exams...however, the authors tried to highlight the most important points in each chapter. I believe that these points are the ones that every pathologist should know (especially those sitting for Boards). If you know how to use the book in an efficient way by focusing on the explanations and reading about the points, you may benefit a lot from it.

I like this book very much, I was using it when I was reading the big text book (Rosi and Ackerman surgical pathology), without this question book I might not be able to read the entire Rosi's book. It helped me to pass the board exam. But I have to say that as every book written by many authors, some chapters are better than others. About the Author
Martin Buber (1878 1965), is among the foremost twentieth-century philosophers of human relations and Jewish thought. He is best known for his revival of popular interest in Hasidism and his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou and I-It relationships. His work on Hasidic thought, Zionism and religious philosophy continues to influence both the academic study of Judaism and religious thinking more broadly. He also inspired the trend toward neo-Hasidism among modern Jews. His books include I and Thou, Tales of the Hasidim, On Judaism and many others.

FIVE WORKS WHICH APPLY THEMES OF "I AND THOU"

Martin Buber (1878-1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher and scholar of the Hasidic movement. He taught philosophy from 1938-1951 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

He wrote in the Foreword to this book, "The five works which I have brought together for English readers in this volume have arisen in connection with my little book I and Thou: A New Translation With a Prologue "I and You" and Notes, as filling out and applying what was said there, with particular regard to the needs of our time."

He contrasts his view with that of Luther and Calvin, since for him the Word of God crosses his vision like a falling star to whose fire the meteorite will bear witness without making it light up for him, "and I myself can only bear witness to the light but not produce the stone and say, 'This is it.'" (Pg. 7)

He asserts that dialogue is not to be identified with love. I know no one in any time who has succeeded in loving every man he met. Even Jesus obviously loved of 'sinners' only the loose, lovable sinners, sinners against the Law; not those who were settled and loyal to their inheritance and sinned against him and his message. (Pg. 20-21)

He says that the relation in education is pure dialogue (Pg. 98), and suggests that this reality provides the starting-point for the philosophical science of man; and from this point an advance may be made on the one hand to a transformed understanding of the person and on the other to a transformed understanding of community. "The central subject of this science is neither the individual nor the collective but man with man..." I and Thou exist only in our world, because man exists, and the I, moreover, exists only through the relation to the Thou. "We may come nearer the answer to the question what man is when we come to see him as the eternal meaning of the One with the Other." (Pg. 205)

The essays in this book provide a virtual commentary on themes expounded in Buber's I and Thou, and will be of considerable interest to anyone interested in modern philosophy and spirituality.

the most important book of my life

I read this book as part of a high school class, and the conversations within our class as a result of it were just amazing. a very deep and spiritual book. buber believes that there are three relationships people can have: relationships between man and things, between man and god, and between man and man. to put it simply, to have a relationship with things, you must go to them. to have a relationship with god, god has to come to you. but in relationships between man and man, we can come to each other...

A different side to Cleopatra

The book was quite a read for me. It started off a little slow and you have to wait until about a quarter of the way in the book to actually get to Cleopatra. It was very nice to get a glimpse into the lives of the people around her (even though this is just a novel). Her lover Mark Antony is not really brought up much until the end. It a great read though!
