Were ancient Greek philosophers right about reality being only an illusion? What was really the biggest blunder of Einstein's life? Is everything we've been taught about the universe incorrect? In The Unobservable Universe, visionary scientist and engineer Scott M. Tyson successfully unravels cosmology from the level of rocket science and brings it down to Earth, demystifying the universe in terms that laymen can comprehend and enjoy, splitting atoms but not hairs on this magical mystery tour of the outback of time and space.
Tapping nearly three millennia of scientific philosophy and drawing upon his three decades as a prolific researcher, brilliant scientist and inspiring writer, Tyson artfully deconstructs key misunderstandings that modern science inadvertently continues to embrace - unraveling the inconsistencies and paradoxes emerging from contemporary science and science philosophy, dissecting complex principles and debunking long-held premises with illustrative examples to expose vital new insights. His provocative theories, supported with pragmatic anecdotes and symbolic metaphors, translate quantum physics into a master blueprint for all cosmology readers to examine, explore and contemplate.
Tyson effectively illustrates the meaning of perceptions in a way that will prompt scientists to fundamentally rethink preconceived notions and consider new possibilities. He guides readers in a bold, new direction that provides a coherent framework in which they can truly understand the universe and the underlying Theory of Everything. Informative and illuminating, this groundbreaking book's lively style provides an enlightening and entertaining page-turner, laced with a brilliant combination of compelling theory, solid research, simple analogy, contagious enthusiasm and enough humor to break a smile on the faces of even the most serious cosmologists. Tyson propels readers toward a new state of thinking, with a greater awareness and understanding of the mysteries of the universe that more accurately reflects its truths and realities. As a benchmark for cosmology, The Unobservable Universe will forever change the way we look at our world.

Generally good, but with minor reservations
By AndrewBL
I am, according to my Kindle software, about 84% of the way through the Unobservable Universe. On the whole, I like the book, and it certainly appeals to my cosmological intuition; however, not being a physicist, it's difficult for me to argue with the author's premises. I've read relatively widely in astrophysics and cosmology, starting with Steven Wineberg's "The First Three Minutes". From a philosophical point of view, this book is very satisfying. It should prove worthy also from a theological point of view since a First Cause is still implied, though I'm not sure that Mr. Tyson intended this. While attempting to provide a type of response to String Theorists, I'm afraid that one non-testable thesis is replaced by another. It appears that one could interpret the vacuum field, and its virtual (and real) particles as a product of the Voidverse (read the book), this becomes a sort of circular argument since, by Mr. Tyson's own admission, the void hemiverse is beyond observation (hence, not testable), at least directly. I do have a feeling that his concept of entanglement (although he doesn't deal with deconstruction)"feels" right in terms of a photon's ability to take every possible path in the Universe before measurement/observation (viz. twin slot experiment).
There is a certain repetition in Prof. Tyson's writing style that, for this reader, was a bit tedious, as was the overly familiar and jocular asides. This should, in no way, dissuade a potential reader from buying the book, because the overall experience is very satisfying. If subsequent books, contemplated by the author, are to appear, I would suggest he write it using a twin track, e.g., read this chapter to consolidate your understanding, or, move on to chapter such and such, to bypass it and move ahead.
While I decry Logical Positivism, or an overly reductionist approach as a means to fully understand Unity, I also recognize that the science of physics has led us to the point where writers like Prof. Tyson can attempt books like the Unobservable Universe, which I applaud. This book reminds me of thought experiments, such as Einstein's, and it appears to be a clarion call that Physics needs to head back in this direction, and reduce (not eliminate) its over-dependence upon big machine physics. (Thought experiments certainly require less funding.) Clearly, the various reductions and other scientific extrapolations will eventually have to be reassembled into a new paradigm to satisfy both objectivity and intuition. It seems that Science is pointing the way to God (however that notion is conceived), and this book appears to be pointing the way. Certainly I believe with the emerging re-conceptualization of God that is currently underway. (I also agree with Prof. Tyson regarding Robert Lanza's book on Biocentrism.) This book is a good read, and it will cause you to think about the possibilities.

Food For Thought
By Jim Hanlon
I've only read the first 50 pages (and I do plan to complete the book), but I there are some aspects of the book, even in the first 50 pages, that motivated me to post this partial review. First, the book is interesting. The author visits interesting aspects of physics and cosmology. He definitely has a point of view and is relentless and somewhat overly repetitious in making his case. He appears to unfairly castigate scientists for close-mindedness once a theory is generally accepted - which is not my personal experience. And considering the quantity of claims and assertions the author makes in developing his arguments, the book is poorly footnoted. The "Reference and Notes" section at the end of the book contain only 20 entries, and 9 of them are from Wikipedia - never a good sign. Also I think he goes overboard in defending his assertions. A key assertion is that "everything we've ever learned is wrong". An example cited is that we were taught in high school geometry; that parallel lines meet at infinity. Well, I for one was never taught that parallel lines meet at infinity in a Euclidean plane (and I was in high school during the same time and approximate location as the author). And as a geometry teacher I never taught that parallel lines in a Euclidean plan meet at infinity. The idea of "lines at infinity" is a concept developed by mathematicians to make the transition to projective planes, which is a different concept. So the author is now (at page 50) 0 for 1 in demonstrating that things I learned were wrong. I'll give you his final batting average when I complete the book.

What are you waiting for?
By Afsi Ghafourian
I've always wanted to learn more about quantum physics, the universe, and everything. I wanted a book that would keep my interest, wouldn't get me lost half way through reading it, and would help me understand topics such as black holes, Mass-Energy of the universe, Einstein's relativity theory, time travel and more. Well, I found that book. The unobservable Universe by Scott Tyson is a book everyone would enjoy reading. Whether you are a high school student, a biologist, a PHD in physics, or just a curious mind you would learn a lot from this book. Scott takes you through a journey of time, and patiently, with clear examples and experiments explains his theory on matter, energy, light , gravity and the relativity of it all. He takes you through 2500 years of studies of life and the universe. He fearlessly challenges Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, and offers new thinking to the big bang theory that is chilling and compelling.
The book has a great pace from the beginning to the end, explaining the kinds of measurements in quantum physics with humor and thought provoking history behind the field. He gives a background and clear explanation when referencing terms unknown to the average layman.
Scott also does a beautiful job with a 4 page summary of the entire book, revisiting the main objective and his reasoning behind his controversy of the universe expansion or contraction. The book is entertaining, light, easy to follow, and has a great flow from beginning to the end. The unobservable Universe is a must have in anyone's collection of scientific books.
