From Skedaddle to Selfie: Words of the Generations, by Allan Metcalf

From baby boomers with 'groovy' and 'yuppie,' to Generation X with 'whatever' and 'like,' each generation inevitably comes to use certain words that are particular to its unique time in history. Those words not only tell us a great deal about the people in those generations, but highlight their differences with other generations.

In this entertaining compilation, Allan Metcalf, author of OK: The Improbable Story of America's Greatest Word, shows that each generation--those born within the same roughly 20-year time period--can be identified and characterized by its key words. Metcalf tells the story of the history and usage of these words, starting with the American Revolution and ending with the post-Millennial Homeland generation. With special attention to the differences in vocabulary among today's generations--the sometimes awkward Millennials, the grunge music of Generation X, hippies among the Boomers, and bobbysoxers among the Silents--From Skeddadle to Selfie compiles dozens of words we thought we knew, and tells the unheard stories of each and how they accompanied its generation through its time.

Review

"Groovy" was one of the signature words of my generation, the baby boomers, along with "teenybopper," "hippie," "lifestyle," "yuppies," and the widespread and public use of the English language's most adaptable demotic verb.. . .
To read his account, in which each term gets a brief commentary on how a particular generation characteristically invented it or repurposed an older one, is to be persuaded that he has heard the echoes of America's past and present. - Baltimore Sun

Metcalf's history skedaddles and jitterbugs quite swiftly through the 20th-century generations, pausing briefly to explain "babysitters" and "necking and petting" and "sexy", the great transformation of the word "gay" and the meaning of the shift from "hi" to "hey". Generation Y, fittingly, is generation abbrev: YOLO, LOL, FOMO are all hashtagged here. - The Guardian

"Flappers, teenagers, hippies, yuppies, slackers, and hipsters - members of every generation will find these word stories fascinating and telling." --Erin McKean, Founder, Wordnik.com

"America is obsessed with generations: The Greatest Generation, Generations X and Y, the Pepsi Generation - every twenty years or so, a new generation of Americans adopts a new worldview and, Allan Metcalf argues, a new vocabulary to go along with it. Some of those distinctive words have fractured American experience (scalawag, 23 skidoo, bobbysoxer, YOLO); others (OK, hot dog, dude, trick or treat) have stitched generations, like so many stars and stripes, into an American heritage. Too often, different generations just don't understand one another, but, with Metcalf's help, we can try to dig what we all say." --Michael Adams, author of Slang: The People's Poetry

"Injecting humorous analogies and examples throughout, Allan Metcalf has compiled a fascinating look at the language of certain periods on the U.S. timeline. Readers will see the birth, evolution and, to some degree, the diminishment of terms. From Skedaddle to Selfie is sure to be a hit with any word lover." --Shelf Awareness

Words that characterize generations. His generations are odd and the word selection subjective but interesting. A fast read.
By lyndonbrecht
Metcalf has a great topic here, but could carry it out better. He divides American history into generations, backfilling from the recent Gen X and all that. These seem somewhat forced. The Republican generation 1742-66; Compromise generation 1767-91; Transcendental generation 1792-1821; Gilded 1822-42; Progressive 1843-59; Missionary 1860-82; Lost generation 1883-1900; and so on. These are the years people were born and grew up and used words he lists. His selection is quite arbitrary, but interesting and should please anyone interested in words and jargon.

Most of his selections lasted a few years to a few decades but some remain. Okay, for example, remains nearly as common as "like." Some words change. Pioneer, foe example, originally had a military meaning, something like advance guard. The deadline comes from a line drawn in the sand which, if prisoners crossed at Andersonville they were shot--this one is contestable. Dude goes back to 1883 meaning a foppish young man.

This is not a particularly serious book, it's light reading. Buy another book if it's Christmas and you've got a serious etymologist in the family.

A Book for Word Lovers and Knowledge Junkies Alike
By Hannah
I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have a love of words. Once when I was younger I tried to start a collection of words by writing new ones down in a notebook.
It didn't work. It bored me and I gave up.
However, all this is to say that I have a great interest in words of all sorts, and I also have a great interest in learning things that I don't need to know, but give me facts that I can later tell to all of my friends.
Needless to say, when i was scrolling through NetGalley and saw this book, I was pretty excited to read it.
'From Skedaddle to Selfie' is a book on the history of words. The author has taken many words that are common nowadays and done quite a bit of research into their backgrounds, including where they came from, their first mentions, and how the word has changed over the generations. We also learn some of the events surrounding the birth of the word and how they affected its meaning, and how later events caused the word's meaning to slowly warp.
Some words that I had found the background particularly interesting were G.I. Joe, the negative connotation of which has rather disappeared, O.K., a word whose 'birth' I had never before thought about, and we also get to read about the reaction to the new word, 'sexy' in the 20s (they were horrified).
The book was very entertaining, and I now have a lot of interesting facts to share with people that I know. I recommend this book to word lovers and knowledge junkies alike. If you're both of those, so much the better.

Enjoyable read with interesting organization
By Earl
I was expecting a fairly basic collection of words from different generations which helped to define those generations. This book provided so much more than that. As explained in the beginning, the structure of the generations is based on research by Strauss and Howe on generational cycles and the types of generations that have historically preceded and followed each other.

By use of this general guideline, Metcalf presents a collection of words with not simply a bit of history about each word but also how the words happen to coincide with the type of generation as described by Strauss and Howe.

This will be an interesting read for lovers of words and for history buffs who like to read about the ways in which language and culture are intertwined. Highly recommended!
