Read this book before you get a herding dog. It may save his life.

A few nights ago, I sat down to watch a movie while I ate a nice piece of grilled salmon. As I sat down, I realized that the dog's food dish was empty. So, I walked back to the garage to refill the dish, leaving my salmon perched precariously on the edge of the coffee table, with my eight-month-old Aussie puppy just inches away. Of course, you can guess what I found when I got back.
My puppy was sitting at attention, alertly guarding the salmon against intruders in my absence.
What? You didn't guess that?
Yes, I trust her enough to turn my back and leave the room, with a mouth-watering piece of meat within easy reach. I know she won't take it, as long as I tell her "Not for doggies!" Of course, it took us a while to get to that point. It was quite different when she was three months old.
I don't know many owners who would trust a mature dog that way, let alone a puppy. Aussies really are exceptional. Unfortunately, however, a large number of Aussies end up in shelters every year. The same is true of other herding breeds. Why is that? Because most owners are not prepared to deal with these remarkable dogs. They mistakenly assume that a highly intelligent dog will require less training. In fact, the opposite is true. Like a child prodigy, a herding dog will require much more training and attention, or he will become bored and cause problems. Books such as this one are essential reading for anyone who's contemplating getting a herding dog.

Food for thought

After 30+ years of Labradors, this time we went with a Cardigan Corgi, mainly because we are now older and he is smaller but still has that "big dog" look. I never even considered that a herding dog would be so different from a retriever. A dog is a dog, right? Well, no. In addition to the expected challenges of a puppy (our corgi is five months old now) after being used to elderly labs, we now have a dog that wants to chase bikes, cars, and the vacuum cleaner. I never connected that to his being a herding dog until reading this book. Now I realize I have a bigger challenge ahead than I anticipated, but also a great opportunity to develop this little guy, who is clearly intelligent, eager to learn, and full of energy.
This book provides a lot of practical commands to teach as well as explaining how herding dogs think and why they are the way they are. I would definitely recommend it, particularly if you are new to herders.
